Not far fetched at all. There are two issues which are screwing up the airlines; one is crewing costs which is a factor of crew numbers and crew pay, a union/management issue. The second is unfunded pension benefits/payouts to retirees which is killing the airlines cash flow.
Fuel costs are a variable which the airlines can hedge with forward contracts to keep at a set level for the year. Aircraft capital costs are a function of the underlying leases held by big finance companies e.g. G.E. Capital. These have all sorts of negotiated pay rates depending upon activity miles flown, end of lease valuations, etc. etc.
