It's not just leftist liberals who want to thrust more government control on us. Plenty of people who consider themselves "conservatives" (even religious conservatives), are supporting such Nanny state ideas.

All you have to do to realize that is to read some of the posts at FR. I remember years ago-when the now-defunct National Smokers Alliance was first starting to grow (before the tobacco companies sold us out, too). A guy was taking signatures on a petition outside a store in Toledo. My friend & I signed it, then were finishing our cigarettes, when an older couple approached the entrance. They were wearing campaign buttons for several of the local Republican candidates for various offices, and had money falling out their asses. You could just tell. Probably in their mid-60's, dressed to the teeth. Also noticed they had an anti-abortion bumper sticker on their car. The guy explained to them the purpose of the petition was to fight tax increases & bans directed against smokers. They then began to deride the guy, and said no way would they sign something like that. The guy said: "Don't you believe in freedom, Sir?" His reply: "Not where smokers are concerned." They then went inside. I'm sure he's long dead by now, but I'll never forget that statement as long as I live. Can't. See pretty much the same statement here quite a bit.

LoL, I hope you got a picture of that!

I can understand why.

Maybe we could contact the RINOrat 7 with this cause since it is a bi-partisan issue.

I believe that both have rights, smokers and nonsmokers. If they are going to put high taxes on tobacco products, then they will have to make it fair and put high taxes on all alcoholic beverages, too. I don't see that happening, do you all? Maybe they should do the same for candy and fast food to make it fair. Then everybody will have to share the burden.
