Observers Say McCain Sealed His Fate in the GOP with 'Compromise' Role
AgapePress ^ | June 2, 2005 | By Bill Fancher and Jody Brown

A leader of the modern conservative movement says the bipartisan deal to end the filibusters of President Bush's judicial nominees was all about the presidential election of 2008.

Arizona Senator John McCain was one of the seven Republicans involved in brokering the recent controversial "compromise" that suspended a Democratic-led filibuster and allowed judicial nominee Priscilla Owen to finally get an up-or-down vote before the full Senate. The deal called for allowing two other nominees to go before the Senate for a confirmation vote, but permitted Democrats to continue their filibustering tactics on future nominees.

Paul Weyrich, the founder and director of the Free Congress Foundation, has been on the Washington scene for decades. Weyrich is convinced "pure politics" were behind McCain's efforts to broker the judicial compromise that ended the filibusters before Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist could lead a change of Senate rules ending the unprecedented blocking tactics.

"I think John McCain could not stand to see Bill Frist [become] a hero to the conservative movement, which he would have been had he been able to deliver," says Weyrich. He feels the Arizona senator's hopes of someday moving into the Oval Office took over.

"To try to derail Frist's possible campaign for the presidency, McCain was willing to undercut his president, undercut his majority leader, undercut Republicans in the Senate, and undercut the country," Weyrich says matter-of-factly. "It is the kind of raw, nasty politics that most of us abhor [and] the kind of issue that is not going to be forgotten. In my opinion, this absolutely seals his fate in Republican primaries and conventions."

Weyrich is not alone in that assessment. Grover G. Norquist, the president of Americans for Tax Reform, told FreeRepublic.com that by his actions, McCain has essentially written himself off as a potential nominee.

I think the state party knew some stuff about McClintock that we only learned in the governor's race.

I liked him until he refused to pull out.

No problem with his conservatism, but until you groom the voters to go for a guy like him, he'd lose every time state wide. He had personal marketing problems IMO, but he made a mistake doing what he did by staying in the race.

He got himself a spoiler tag and burned lots of bridges in the state.

McCain acted against the party for his own perceived career.

"but a very good chance of being the demonRAT nominee (if he can survive Hillary's attacks)."

He would never survive the media. While the media love him now for going against the hated conservatives, he would be burned at the stake by the media if he run as anything. That is something that McLame's ego can't digest. He's a tool and nothing but a tool.

It has always seemed to me, that Orange County Repubs. acted against McClintock. He marvericked on the bunch, upon the recall effort. It also seems to me, that Orange County Repubs. have entirely too much say- party wise. They are the reason for compromising the ability of district voting. Just too concerned with their own status quo, to bother considering the state body politic, as it is. I truly hope the redistricting happens. Enough of the well moneyed elitists in bed with the well moneyed girly boys and manly girls.

I agree about getting the state legislature changed out.

If we can make a 5-7% CHANGE in the voting pattern, then Republicans would dominate California.

The government and teacher's unions are big problems.

I think there needs to be a law that all government jobs should be limited in pay and benefits to no more than the average salary in the private sector for similar work.

That would bust all the union activity, and would reduce the budgets everywhere by many millions.

The little secrets concerning all the home sales and new sky high prices is that the new homes produce in most cases 400% MORE in property taxes to the state which will awash them in monies.

You are correct! If Arnie can get that one measure through, the rebirth of Calif. will actually happen- on all levels, and so will follow Our Nation. Until that magical time, his current relief of workers comp. and other stop gap measures are exactly that- just stop gap bandaids on a sucking chest wound.

I think you are correct. McCain realizes he has no chance of ever being the Republican nominee, but a very good chance of being the demonRAT nominee (if he can survive Hillary's attacks).

And I think the latter is unlikely. He will be shattered like so much glass.

The rejection will come from both sides. The horrid personal attacks from Hitlery, then the subtle "I don't know you and don't want to" behavior from conservatives. From our side it will be another "Trent Lott - You're a worthlesss Eunich" scenario all over again. It will be far worse for him than we can imagine.

It will start out as a big media drum beat for his candidacy. He'll be all confident. Then the media will turn on a dime against him once Hitlery barks an order.

If he runs, the 2008 elections will leave him in ruins. After what he did with the compromise, it would be justice served.

I don't give him a spitting chance in any election outside AZ.

The AZ republicans may just give him the boot like Daschle got in SD. I know many are fed up with McCain's mutiny.

John McCain was a courageous man, a true hero, a national treasure. That was when he was in the military. As a politician, he is a slime, a crackpot, a disaster. Totally untrustworthy with an ego as wide as the country, McCain needs badly to retire to a golf course to play a few rounds with that other former fine officer and latterday dump of a poltician, Jimmie Carter.

The sliver lining just might be that McCain might have done us a great favor as he is now dead meat in the Republican party. The thing that worriers me is the damage that he will try and accomplish once that he finally realizes that the base will never support him for the presidency.

It's nonsense to believe that Hillary would select McManiac to be her running mate.

Say what you will, the Beest is not that stupid a politician. She will not choose someone who is unstable, who wants to be a bigger star than she, who is not a long-time proven socialist and loyalist, or someone who has his own weird agenda (whatever it is) in the political world.

Above all, she would not fill out her ticket with castoff garbage from the Republican Party.

Let's get real.
