Muslim in America
Dallas Morning News ^ | June 18, 2005 | Reihan Salam

Posted on 06/20/2005 5:13:43 PM PDT by Smartaleck

Suspicions about Islam after Sept. 11 have given rise to resentment, fear and violence in Europe. But in the U.S., which has welcomed Muslims with its freedoms and opportunities, a more tolerant, open Islam is emerging – and setting an example for the rest of the world, says writer REIHAN SALAM.

Because the majority of Muslim Americans emigrated from repressive countries, and because they've been welcomed with open arms, there is a pervasive sense of gratitude for American freedoms and a belief that any political grievances ought to be addressed at the ballot box. Law enforcement is seen not as an enemy by Muslim Americans, but as an ally. Suffice it to say, the United States has been very fortunate in this regard.

Consider the fate of Muslim communities in Europe, where a poisonous cocktail of ghettoization, multicultural ideology and economic stagnation has radicalized broad swaths of the population. Strangely enough, the Sept. 11 terror attacks have had far more impact on daily life in Europe than here at home. Fear is palpable, particularly in Holland, once considered a model of tolerance and now a tinderbox. There the hate campaign has taken violent form, reaching a crescendo in the murder of Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh.

Judging by the escalating threats, it seems that Mr. Van Gogh's murder won't be the last of it. Native-born European Islamists have seized the initiative, condemning the moral bankruptcy of secular Europe in fiery language. Though France hasn't yet seen assassinations on a grand scale, Muslim youths have been implicated in near-constant attacks against French Jews, ranging from petty harassment and intimidation to fire bombings and worse.

Come on, calling Dearborn a 'ghetto' is quite a stretch, though isn't it?

Don't get me wrong I could care less about Dearborn, I just wouldn't refer ro it as a ghetto.

The hijackers came from suadi arabia not america, even if they were living here illegally.

Iraq today is Paris/Brussles/Amersterdam 25 years from now.

youre missing the point, i am not saying that poverty is a cause of terrorism, it isnt. i am saying the muslim ghettos of europe are far more likely to spawn an intifada than muslim communities in the USA

This maps does not inculde in terrorists' infestation of Lodi, CA.

Steve Emerson just updated this map, and the cells that aren't on this map popped up after this map was published.  I am sure there are many more that haven't been uncovered yet.

People tell me all the time that this Mosque isn't on it and that Mosque isn't on it.  So, another map needs to be updated.  They are really multiplying fast.

I cannot believe that those terror cells exist in Texas.  I would have believed the Texans would have loaded up their six shooters and showed those muzzies what a real Jihad looks like.

I hear ya.  Thousands of them come across the border every night.  And what better place to find refuge then in a Mosque?

"Ghetto" btw can mean anyplace where a racial or religious group congregates in large numbers, not necessarily housing projects, pawn shops, etc.

__________________________________________

By your definition Great Neck is a Jewish Ghetto and Manhasset is an Irish Ghetto. Of course that's not the case. An ethnic or economic or religious specific neighborhood is a ghetto only if outside forces create the isolation through some form of pressure, like with the Warsaw Ghetto.

A friend of mine once referred to Lawrence, NY as a "Gilded Ghetto." He grew up and still lives there.

Its all relative. A friend of mine raised in Palos Verdes, CA would definately refer to say Bay Ridge, Sunset Park, and Flushing as being "ghetto," while others would not go that far.

And they know that Americans are not Eurosponges. Cross us and they know that they will have hell to pay.

England is so terrified of Muslims that they are creating a law to forbid criticism of religions (and you know the religion they mean is Islam because Muslims kill and Christians don't). Americans, who own plenty of guns, will not accept living in fear. If Muslims get out of line they will be smacked down hard and they know it.

There are a fair number of Muslims here and abroad who do not want to kill us.

That's right. They want to convert us, but if we refuse then...?

What do their books say?
