The US launched a major hunt for the missing men
Two of the three US special forces soldiers missing in eastern Afghanistan for almost a week have been found dead, US government sources tell the BBC.

The whereabouts of the other team member remains unclear, while a fourth soldier was found alive on Saturday.

The governor of Konar province has spoken of reports that an American is being cared for in a remote village.

The US launched a major hunt for the men after a Chinook helicopter sent to find them was shot down last week.

The 16 US soldiers on board the helicopter were killed.

Village mystery

In the Afghan capital, Kabul, US officials confirmed the deaths of the two missing soldiers, members of an elite Navy Seals unit.

Speaking anonymously, one official described their deaths as a "terrible tragedy".

The US military released a statement on Monday confirming that one soldier had been found alive on Saturday.

The man, who had been missing since 28 June, was taken to Bagram Airfield for treatment and is said to be in a stable condition.

But the US remains cautious about reports that villagers in a remote village have been caring for a wounded American.

Mr Wafa said Afghan troops received reports about the man on Sunday night, but had not yet reached the village.

The BBC's Andrew North, in Kabul, says it remains unclear whether this is old information relating to the American already rescued, or evidence of a fourth team member still being alive.

Inquiry demand

Meanwhile, the US military has said it regrets that civilians were killed in an air strike by US forces in eastern Afghanistan.

Women and children were among 17 killed in the raid on Chechal village, Konar province governor Assadullah Wafa said.

Mr Wafa has called the bombing a "mistake" and called for an investigation into how it happened.

In a statement, the US said it regretted the loss of innocent life but maintained that it struck a valid target, and that enemy "terrorists" were among those killed.

I sure hope this isn't true.

God bless all 4 of these guys...and their families.

Does anyone here know...is it true these 4 were taking on about a hundred enemies during this mission? I heard something on the news earlier today, and I'm wondering if they were talking about this story.

The deaths of two of the SEALs was confirmed tonight on all the evening news shows, too.

It was a 4-man team. One was rescued Saturday as we all know, 2 were found dead today (no details on the circumstances yet) and one is still considered missing.

There was some confusion earlier today when the Afghan governor of the region claimed that a 2nd SEAL (other than the one already rescued) was safe and being sheltered by local villagers. The U.S. military says they have no info on this claim and think he may be speaking of the SEAL who was already rescued.

So basically, one is still missing.

You're right, we should probably wait for official confirmation. All the confirmation so far seems to be from unnamed sources in the U.S. military.

G.I.'s Recover Bodies of 2 on Seal Team in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan, July 4 - American forces have recovered the bodies of two members of a four-man Navy Seal reconnaissance team that was reported missing last week after coming under hostile fire in a mountainous region of eastern Afghanistan, a senior Defense Department official said Monday.

The defense official, as well as other Pentagon and military officials in Afghanistan and Washington, declined to provide details of where and how the two bodies had been found, and declined to identify the men publicly until family members have been notified.

Seems like confirmation. :-(

This is really too bad. From what I heard on Fox TV, it was a 4-man squad of Navy SEALs. Two guys were killed and two evaded capture and were rescued.

Two guys were killed and two evaded capture and were rescued.

Only one was rescued so far. There's confusion about the 4th SEAL, though he's still officially missing.

From the same NYT article:

News of the deaths, which were first reported by the British Broadcasting Corporation, came as there were conflicting reports about the location of one of the other members of the Special Operations team. The governor of Kunar Province, where the team was when it was reported missing, said Monday that a Seal commando was reported to be alive and in the hands of Afghan villagers.

But American officials in Washington said the governor's remarks, which gave rise to hopes that a second member of the team had been found alive, actually referred to the one team member who was rescued Saturday and flown to safety on Sunday, still leaving one member unaccounted for. "What we have here is a time lag in the reporting," a senior defense official said.

The governor, Asadullah Wafa, cautioned that he was still trying to verify the report but indicated that he believed it was separate from the report of the first Seal commando who was rescued. According to the new report, he said that the sailor was being cared for by villagers, and that Afghan soldiers and policemen were trying to reach the remote village to rescue him. "There is a report, we don't know if it is true yet," he said.

May be an attempt to set-up an ambush?

I just hope they went down fighting and that B-52 strike wasn't a mercy mission.

I'd suspect as we read this they already have the guy or are enroute if the intel was solid or not......those who go in harms way have to know that everything possible will be done to get em back to safety if they fall on hard times under fire or not.....

Don't you just love how they put the word "terrorist" in quotes?
