"It's come down to this in American politics: Do you want venal, overt prevarication or do you want inept, feckless incompetence? The former is today's GOP. The latter are today's Democrats."

Funny, I always thought of the GOP as the incompetents and the 'Rats as the prevaricators. It is so hard to tell them apart once they get to Washington.

I always turn to Bonnie Erbe for a thoughtful analysis of contemporary issues. And the moon is made of green cheese.

the time has arrived to board the plane for Tehran. After all, wouldn't it be a relief to join a society in which religious tyranny is gossamer compared with the version we now face in the good old U.S. of A?

What an idiot.

In other places, girls and women need jump over so many conditions _ 24-hour waiting periods, anti-abortion counseling, taunts from anti-abortion zealots who hover like vultures outside women's health clinics _ that they just give up.

You mean that they don't get to KILL their unborn? THE HORROR!

This article was distributed by Scripps-Howard news service, and is available from several other sources, including Washingtn Post's e-mail service. I do not know it to be covered by the "do-not-reprint" restrictions, but the only non-subscription source I found was "Capitol Hill Blue," which was banned from FR. But I emphasize, it was not a Capitol Hill Blue article.

Another version of this was posted, but was excerpted down to one sentence, and the link was not accessible. I hope you agree that the highlighted points of the article make it worthy of reposting; I apologize if you do not.

I'll pitch in $100 for her plane ticket if she promises to never come back.

"liberals said Justice O'Connor kept a skeletal version of Roe alive, but denuded it to the point she may as well have voted to strike it down. In retrospect they were right."

Uh-huh. So obviously, we conservatives have already won the battle and we're fighting because...?

What is so funny, and so tragic, is that Bonnie Erbe probably figures that she has been nonpartisan in that criticism.

This intellectually shallow, poorly written screed is yet another example why Bonnie Erbe's "journalism" career is headed in the same direction as the late McLain Stevenson. Which is to say, headed down due to bad career choices.

Erbe has the Republicans, Democrats, and the Constitution, dead wrong. But, this is in the same excellent tradition as Scripps Howard generally.

As Bugs Bunny would say, she's "a maroon." Poor dear. Someone should ping her to her fan mail that is accumulating here. LOL.

Perhaps their ability to deliver on such threats (indebted as this White House is to their ilk) means the time has arrived to board the plane for Tehran. After all, wouldn't it be a relief to join a society in which religious tyranny is gossamer compared with the version we now face in the good old U.S. of A?

Jeez. Another case of DHSD (Durbin Hyperbole Shut-off Dysfnction).

Seems to be catching among a certain left-leaning subset of the population.

How intolerable! Nobody likes a quitter! I think Planned Parenthood should play the Patten speech for women considering abortion. Never give up!

Gee, I wonder how they treat unmarried pregnant woman in Tehran.

You have to wonder: at what point does an editor step in and say, "umm, Ms. Erbe: do you really mean to say that Iran's religious intolerance is not nearly as bad as America's?" But I'm sure tens of thousands of law professors would be posting this on their doors, if only it were someplace they'd see it (Atlantic Monthly, etc.) rather than Scripps-Howard.

Bonnie is so stupid that she probably either doesn't know or thinks the right wing media made it all up.

Abortion may still be legal, but it's unavailable in many counties and largely unavailable in a handful of states in the United States. In other places, girls and women need jump over so many conditions _ 24-hour waiting periods, anti-abortion counseling, taunts from anti-abortion zealots who hover like vultures outside women's health clinics _ that they just give up.

This has got to be one of the most outright dishonest statements in the abortion debate that I have ever heard from the left. It is literally no more accurate than saying that the supreme court is only one justice away from requiring that any church can be forced to not only pay for a teenage girl's abortion but also to provide transportation to and from the abortion clinic while concealing the information from her parents.

Gonzalez called two conservative dissenters (including recent appeals court appointee Priscilla Owen) "unconscionable judicial activis(ts)" because they tried to re-write federal law to fit their own extreme right-wing agenda.

Wow, Gonzalez keeps reminding people that he didn't say that about Priscilla Owen and that his comment is being misrepresented, but nobody notices because too many people are repeating this lie.

We unfortunate denizens are beyond exhausted from observing repeat rounds of the low state of American politics' never-ending series of bar brawls.

Glad you guys are tired, Bonnie, because I'm not. I'm ready to rumble.

Moral idiot. Go live under the mullahs and you'd likely give your right arm to escape and join the choir at Falwell's church.
