grabs a belt of grenades and after being sucked into the alien machine releases the grenades and blows it up.

Actually, it was the tripods that the aliens were inside of that were undefeatable with our weapons, not the aliens themselves.

He was "under" their shield when he used the gernades. If he was outside the shield, they would have been ineffective. That's the way I saw it anyway.
