Mehlman is savvy, and this is the right thing to do BECAUSE the NAACP just chose Bush-backer Gordon as its new national director.

I understand what you are saying. I think Mehlman is fairly sharp and knows exactly why he is doing this event. The event sure won't get the same headlines as it would if President Bush attended.
On another thought... Maybe Karl Rove should attend! He can simply stand at the podium with a basket full of raw meat and toss it at random to the shrieking audience.
