A letter to the editor July 18, 2005
Dear Editor:
There are those who would have us continually proclaim to the world that the United States is the best and greatest nation and that it is our duty to bestow our blessings upon all other peoples.
No other nation, they proclaim, is as free, wealthy, innocent, compassionate, able or well-meaning as ours. Life in these United States, they declare, is better than in any other place in the world.
There is a lot in these claims with which most of us agree.
However, most patriots are acutely aware of the numerous shortcomings, injustices and waste that seem an inexorable element of our national life. The current administration declares that to dwell on these is to be an enemy of America.
Patriots know that we ignore our shortcomings at our peril. Patriots are strong and brave enough to face the realities of this nation. Patriots measure the distance between the reality and the ideal. Patriots use this measure to encourage each other to continue to strive for the ideal.
The method is long, arduous, filled with compromise and rarely personally fulfilling for those patriots who work so hard for progress. This is the path of democracy. It is very messy.
Many patriots are sure that the country is on the wrong course, in a variety of ways. These patriots are equally sure of the good sense and intentions of most of their fellow citizens, knowing that what some of us see as symptoms, others see as causes. Patriots believe that people of good will have and will continue to disagree about almost everything as they work together to find means and methods all can share.
In the name of promoting democracy throughout the world, the current administration has embarked upon a course which is smothering democracy in this country. This administration justified its attack on Iraq with conflated and fabricated evidence of the possibility that Iraq might be a real threat in the future.
Patriots know, however, that all of the administration's falsehoods pale in comparison to the fundamental transgression of the Bush administration: the unprovoked attack on another country.
Patriots and all God-fearing Americans must tremble for our country knowing that God is just. Like most criminals, the gang controlling the executive branch of the government of the United States thinks laws don't apply to them.
Those who approve of their actions share in their guilt. Those who do nothing share in their guilt. George W. Bush infamously declared, "You are either with us, or against us." There is no middle ground. Patriots must act. There is but one honorable and patriotic action: the impeachment and conviction of George Bush and Dick Cheney for war crimes.
God bless the USA.
David Baldwin, Madison, WI
Keep smoking that good stuff, David.
The things the loonies will try to come up with ---- sheesh!
I wish there were a way to get this guy's e-mail address.
I'd love for it to be "accidentally" published over the Internet.
Ok - you're guilty. But I ain't doing the first part. I don't want Mr. in Wisconsin coming after me.
"Religious Left" = "Jumbo Shrimp"
O.K. now that "Progressives" didn't work, let's try "Patriots"!
Google is your friend...but you didn't hear it from me. ;)
I know you are upset because for the first time in your little sheltered life you couldn't whine and scream and demand that you get your way. You may also have realized that you are not in the majority.
You lost buddy, sorry, but that's the way it is. President Bush is NOT getting impeached and at this point you should accept this fact, give it up and move on with your life.
Nobody said we're perfect...Just the best place on earth.
Hey Jerkamo, here is why you are wrong, very briefly:!
1. IRAQ was a state sponsor of terror
2. The UN mandated military action through its resolutions
3. IRAQ did not honor terms of the 1991 Iraq war
This is just the tip of the iceberg.
>> The current administration declares that to dwell on these is to be an enemy of America.
I have heard no such declaration out of this, or any, Administration.
Any source for this declaration from Madison.com or David Baldwin...?
This administration justified its attack on Iraq based on the proven evidence that Saddam Hussein was in continued violation of the peace resolution from the first Gulf War. There is no question as to whether Saddam's Iraq was a state sponsor of international terrorism. Saddam was trying to obtain WMD, whether he was successful or not. Would you permit a convicted felon out on parole to continue to try to hire hitmen and buy a gun which he is denied by his prior crimes?
Or the issuing of a "swirly" to one David Baldwin of Madison, WI..
Man, this guy's letter to the editor would never be published in the major locals here...it's way too long.
