I found that odd, it is most difficult to discuss, complain about something if you have not watched it.
I certainly am not advocating watching the show but should you decide to do so, you might be surprised.
Another friend sent me the following:
OK, here is my take,
1) Started a bit antiwar mode, moved to smooth that out.
2) Pushed a racial divide a bit. But, having been in similar situations, I can buy that part.
3) The chat, though rough in content, was I remembered in war but using today's lingo.
4) Pushed the hardliner Sgt. too much and the do whatever it takes officer image just a bit over the edge. But, I served with both types in Nam.
5) War footage was graphic, cheating wifes back home common, the pain of leaving family at home realistic, the pain of watching your brothers get blown up or away realistic enough.
My Bottom Line on the whole is:
WAR IS HELL and by God we should be everything we can do for troops over there.
So with that in mind I look forward to my fellow Freeper's observations on this show.
I have always felt my mission, to provide articles on the military, offering all the good that they do, the hero's and ways to support our troops and their families.
So, thank you for reminding where my heart lies -- and know I will continue to bring articles on our military and will only ask that you share them with your friends and family and do what you can to support these fine men and women.
I realize my attentions have been side stepped by our children and those that prey upon our children. But, I do think one can have heart large enough to take on both of these important issues.
I also would like to say thank you to those who have served this fine nation, those who have loved one's serving this fine nation and all those support these fine men and women.
Maybe I'll be brave and check it out. Ever since I walked the walk of a mom whose son was serving in a war (Operation Iraqi Freedom) I just can't seem to make it through war reports, war shows, war movies, and war documentaries without serious emotional reactions and bringing on that same sort of panic attack feeling I had when he left. I'll trust you, Former Military Chick, to give me an honest review of the show. I just bet our son will watch it, and he'll let me know what he thinks.
Thanks for another fine post. :)
I tivo'd it. Haven't watched it yet.
I read a review in the New York Post and Linda Stasi didn't like it.
She's a flaming liberal. Anything she doesn't like is probably pretty good, and vice versa.
I might watch the next episode. Maybe.
I did not expect a documentary nor did I expect anything approaching reality. This is supposed to be fiction, after all.
And as fiction, after an hour, I still have no emotional investment in any of the characters. Heck, after the opening scenes, I didn't even like most of them. Still don't.
Bochco and his co-producer/writer/director sidekick, Chris Gerolmo, were IMHO. . . grossly, unforgivably lazy. They went for every easy cliché and one-dimensional character that ever showed up in a war movie.
And, hopefully, before they signed off on the episode 2 script, they actually took the time and effort to hire a military technical advisor or two.
Disappointing, but I'll probably give it another week before looking for a tractor pull or something. :-)
It bored me, though I gave it 45 minutes to un-bore me. From what I've read so far, I didn't miss anything in the last 15. Hmm... Quarterback... scholarship... going back to be a quarterback after his hitch... yep, he's losing a body-part.
Just remember anything coming out of Hollywood about the war is anti-war. I never saw Band of Brothers because I refuse to watch anything that has anything to do with Spielburg. I heard he is planning the Pacific theatre version of B of B, will avoid that also.
Mike not sure if you could see this, but, I posted the thread regarding previews shooting it down and not allowing folks to watch to make an informed decision for themselves and if needed debate this show and let the networks know about your feelings on the merit's of the program.
Folks were very civil on this thread, which was really terrific.
