Byrd Responds to GOP Ads

Eight-term Democratic Sen. Robert C. Byrd has responded to a Republican ad criticizing his record by putting out his own spot that says the GOP commercial is false and misleading.

The West Virginia lawmaker has yet to announce that he will seek a ninth term in 2006. More than a year before the election, the National Republican Senatorial Committee already has begun showing an ad that assails Byrd for his votes against President Bush on national security and taxes.

The 87-year-old Byrd ran out a 30-second commercial in response.

"Their agenda? Privatize Social Security and tax breaks for companies that ship our jobs overseas," Byrd's ad says.

The spot also features Iraq war veteran and West Virginia University graduate Jared Towner, who praises Byrd for "bringing jobs to West Virginia, funding schools and hospitals, protecting our flag and supporting our troops."

Ned Rose, chairman of Byrd's campaign committee, said it is spending about $50,000 to air its ad. The Republicans say they are spending tens of thousands but would not provide specifics.

Both ads have appeared only in the state's Charleston-Huntington television market in the southwest part of the state.

National Republicans are hoping that three-term Rep. Shelley Moore Capito will challenge Byrd in a state that has grown more Republican; Bush got 56 percent of vote in 2004 to John Kerry's 43 percent. Capito has said she would not decide until next month.

Byrd needs to go home and sit on his porch like a "good ole Liberal." He's done enough damage to this country for one lifetime.

That is the only ad that is necessary.

He'll probably run for a 9th term in 2006 and the people of West Virginia will be manipulated and elect him.

Byrd's been in the Senate longer than my parents, my brother, and myself have been alive. The man will probably stay there until he dies.

Put him on the defensive. He is too old to still be serving. Have any of you seen him on camera lately?

He has Parkinsons (shakes?) and hardly 50% of what he says even makes liberal sense anymore.

What do these people need to be shown the door?

Too much of their identity is sewn up in politics. No real life at all!

Go Rep. Shelley Moore Capito, Go!

She's got a respectable American Conservative Union rating of 74% over four years.

That beats the two Dems in the House who've been there both OVER 20 years (waiting for Byrd to give it up no doubt) with rates of 32 and 20.

Byrd's rating??? A miserable 30% lifetime and 19% average the last two sessions.

Typical Liberal ad. Hiding behind the military uniform in a time of war.

I think he's trying to hang in to break Strom's record for length of service! I despise Byrd and would pay good money to slap him.

I would love to see established a Robt Byrd "dial-up" on-line archive to hear any discourse on Democracy that has ever been given or any discourse that is contemplated to be given by Sen Byrd. His eloquence should be made available at low cost to all US Citizens.

The fact that this prehistoric rectile bought air time to lob Byrd droppings at West Virginians - without so much as a declared opponent in the Republican primaries - just shows how apoplectic his nursing home wards are about having him face someone who was not only born after the invention of lighter-than-air travel, but also has cranial synapses that don't fire directly to the gluteal cleft in an attempt to communicate.

The way I understand it, the only things without the name Robert C. Byrd on it are public urinals. It must be why he is still hanging on!

Pretty soon, they will have to change the name of the state to West Byrdistan.....
