In July, 1945, Japan still had over one million men in uniform on their four main islands, a couple hundred thousand troops in Korea and another million plus in China/South East Asia. The fire bombings had not stopped war production which had been largely moved underground or into caves. They didn't surrender after the first atomic bomb and would have fought us well into the 1950s if we had only used one. Only after the second bomb took out Nagasaki and the the threat of more bombs was made clear (and the reality of two completely destroyed cities sank in) did surrender become the unavoidable choice.

Look, war is hell, and I'm sure most infantry men would rather someone else die than them. That's understandable...

The problem is that killing hoards of civilians is not the answer. And as the son of an Army soldier, a former army man myself, I can gladly say dropping the bombs was wrong and a crime against humanity.

And yes, I do have an idea what I'm talking about -- it's why I don't have to resort to using expletives...
