Jack Kerouac's novel "On the Road" was the highest-ranking book, in 19th place.
As Truman Capote said of Kerouac Thats not writing. Thats typing.
On the Road is one of those books that people like to say they read, but few really do.
As a person who has actually read it, I can tell you that nobody could possibly read it and think it was a great book. Back and forth, across the country, waiting for something to happen. Relentless tedium, highlighted only by sections that are somewhat less tedious than the others.

I read it too, and even THE DHARMA BUMS for good measure. But that was it for me and Jack Kerouac!

nobody could possibly read it and think it was a great book. The target is not "great", it's "influential". That book turned more people off reading than any other.

And about the only thing I really remember from ON THE ROAD is one of the characters remarking 'there must be a lot of Italians in Sausalito'!

Relentless tedium, highlighted only by sections that are somewhat less tedious than the others. Thank you for so succinctly capturing the essence of "On The Road"...
