MANSEHRA: A candidate for the nazim’s office in Kohistan district of the Hazara region paid Rs 2,00,000 and gave the hand of his 11-year-old daughter to his political rival to get elected unopposed. Ajoon, a candidate for the nazim’s office in Kunsher union council of Palas tehsil, has made this deal with Vilayat Noor, former’s political opponent, who has withdrawn his nomination papers, an election official in Dassu told Daily Times by phone on Saturday. Earlier, there were reports that Ajoon had given the hand of his one-year-old daughter to Vilayat Noor, but the official said that the girl was 11-year-old. People from various walks of life have expressed concern over the deal. A local PML leader criticised both Ajoon and Vilayat Noor for this election deal. He demanded the chief election commission postpone election for the nazim’s office in Kunsher union council. This is part of the Islamic mentality. Daughters are married off to form alliances with different tribes, etc. They have been doing this for centuries.
Tribal mentalities apart, I would be surprised if islam and its treatment of women had nothing to do with it surviving into the 21st century.
I'm not sure what to make of this article. It says he gave his "daughter's hand". In other societies this would mean marriage, but these are Muslims. He might have just lopped off her hand. ???? ;)
actually I think Islam and the way adherents to that religion treat women came out of the various tribal mentalities....
