Another illegal house ordered shut (Farmingville, NY)

Brookhaven Town officials Wednesday ordered shut a seventh illegally overcrowded house in Farmingville in a crackdown that is provoking cheers from many residents who complain their neighborhoods are being destroyed but worries among immigrant advocates that the tenants have no place to go.

The two-story house at 196 Berkshire Dr. was home to between 14 and 42 people and had various code violations, including exposed electrical wires, blocked doors, litter and no smoke detectors, said Inez Birbiglia, a Brookhaven Town spokeswoman.

Authorities identified the owner as Maria Rosa Esteves, who could not be reached for comment. Esteves lives in Selden, according to town officials and court papers.

Birbiglia told Newsday that tenants in the single-family house paid Esteves $50 a week in rent.

Some neighbors of the house praised the town action, saying the house and others like it were contributing to problems such as loud music and heavy truck traffic in the residential neighborhood.

"I'm happy. It's about time," said one resident who gave his name only as Tom.

Another neighbor, Steve Ferrante, 40, said truck traffic had gotten so bad that "the kids can't walk safely to school ... The quality of life just isn't there."

Advocates for the tenants, mainly Mexican day laborers, said they had no place to go. Several tenants in the house said four children ages 11 to 17 also resided there. Brookhaven officials told the tenants Wednesday they could get their belongings but had to be out of the house by last night.

"It can't be that they are throwing us out into the street," one woman who declined to give her name said in Spanish. "I haven't done anything except dedicate myself to working and raising my children."

This is how large swaths of Los Angeles have fallen into ruin.

Oh, the illegals have someplace to go. Like back to Mexico.

I wonder why the folks who complain about zoning laws and Homeowners Associations never come into these threads?

Perhaps this is the legal "out" to start taking care of the problem. Think of it, if we started forcing overcrowding and code violation laws, then illegals would have to start living in homes in reasonable numbers, and keep those home up to code like the rest of us. They'd each have to make more money, and start paying normal bills like the rest of us for housing. Suddenly, they'd be keeping so little of their paychecks (like WE ALL DO) that going home wouldn't look so bad. Plus, employers would have a harder time hiring them since they'd complain about the substandard wages not being enough to pay for their housing. (DUH!)

The down side is I hate, hate, hate the idea of government telling us how many people can live in a home. Of course, when people take things to extremes it ruins it for everyone.

Try sending them back to Mexico.

Several tenants in the house said four children ages 11 to 17 also resided there.

Oh, the humanity!

You've also managed to add breaking the law to your busy schedule.

American neighborhoods are being turned into Mexican Barrios.

In Northern CA single family homes are being bought out by Mexicans and turned into communes of day workers and minimum wage workers. Three bedroom, 1300 square foot family home have 12 - 15 adults and seven kids living there, with attendant cars, truck and noise.

Newsday should rename itself the "Illegal Immigrant Press". It's appalling. My folks live on Long Island and last Sunday, when I was there visiting, there was a huge article about some guy who rents to these "undocumented workers" (in Newsday-speak) and it was totally pro-illegal. I was furious.

Newsday and others like to bully politicians especially into not enforcing the law. I'm glad to see Levy isn't backing down from their attacks.

Greed and a fast buck. Prosecute the home owner who was making $6,000 a month off these people.

Oh yes you do. Get your asses back to corrupt filthy Mexico where you came from and if you want to come to our beloved country then apply legally. I applaud Farmingville residents for stading up and not letting their neighborhoods be turned into the 3rd world barrios of Mexico.

Sounds like something you would find in the third world doesn't it?
