A posh Jersey Shore eatery, under fire for referring to a pair of diners as a "Jew Couple" on their check, is in hot water again.
Longtime customer Joanne Fordyce said she was outraged when she noticed that her check from Parkhill's Waterfront Grill in Loch Arbour printed, just below her table number, "Dirty Joanne."
"They're real nice to your face and then they let you know how they really feel when you get the check," said an outraged Fordyce, a human-resources director.
She said she was so shocked, she held onto her July 15, 2004, receipt for a year.
Fordyce said she bought $9 worth of cocktails at the bar, and added a generous $5 tip.
Later, she noticed the "Dirty" insult.
"How nice could I be? I felt like an ass after that," she said.
"I was going to let it go, but now I see they are still doing it.
"This is definitely not the normal practice if you want to stay in business. I know there are plenty of my friends that have had bad experiences there. That's why they don't go anymore."
She said that in her case, it was a female bartender who wrote up the check.
"I don't know, maybe the bartender is jealous because we drive a Mercedes. But they don't have to be jealous any longer. We just don't want to go there and be treated like this," she said angrily.
Fordyce, 34, said she decided to come forward after reading about diner Elliot Stein's shocking experience at Parkhill's, in Wednesday's Post.
In that July 8 incident, Stein's check referred to the 23-year-old Brooklyn shoe buyer and his girlfriend, Jennifer Cassin, as "Jew Couple."
"This is still going on? It's amazing," Fordyce said in disbelief.
She said she had a similar experience to Stein's when she went to complain to the same manager, Malia Wells, and received the cold shoulder.
"I was blown off like it didn't matter," said Fordyce, who lives in the area. "There was no apology."
Fordyce, who had been a Parkhill patron for seven years, said she once spent $3,000 on a baby shower at the eatery.
Fordyce yesterday filed a complaint with the New Jersey Division on Civil Rights.
================== This is an excerpt
I thought we weren't allowed to post Asbury Park Press articles.
This is what the article is about. Read the title and ht first couple of sentences.
But we're all to assume "Dirty Joanne" is a racist slur? This woman admits to patronizing this eatery for SEVEN years, including a $3000 baby shower. How are we NOT to know what Dirty means? Maybe she tells dirty jokes, maybe she likes dirty martinis, maybe she never washes her car?? You're combining both stories when the only thing in common I see are: the eatery, and tagging customers.
Since when is a Tip "generosity"... Giving a dollar to a homeless guy is generosity, Giving a Tip is to make sure you next drink is heavy on booze and light on mixer and faster then the last.
Good Grief! Why don't you borrow a sense of humor from someone and then come back and rejoin the conversation. There was NOTHING, REPEAT NOTHING racist about this incident. Dead's comments and those of others are funny!
Good luck with that.
Surely you must realize we Americans have 'evolved' since 1789 such that our government courtrooms are one-stop shops for all forms of complaint and redress.
Not in my book. It's the Dems that call Middle America redneck. Seems to me these are the very same people who still keep American values.
Thanks for the explanation; I am aware of the origin of the word.
Best regards, EP
Me too. What a hoot!
I guess, this is because you yourself have a pure heart.
"Dirty" in this case is an abbreviation for an OLD insult "dirty Jew."
I guess, this is because you yourself have a pure heart.
"Dirty" in this case is an abbreviation for an OLD insult "dirty Jew." With that in mind, reread the title and the first few sentences.
My guess these were specific messages directed to a limited number of customers for a specific reason. If all customers were characterized this way, to their faces, they'd be out of business.
I'd like to think you're right. But, given all the facts, I'd be pleasantly and thoroughly shocked if the "dirty" reference was not intended to mean "dirty Jew."
"A posh Jersey Shore eatery ..."
Bwaghahaha.
Especially one where drinks, dinner for two, and (presumably) tip for $36.75.
Look at the photo in post 51. I think you are way off base here.
How is it that one day "dirty" is an abbreviation for "dirty Jew" but yesterday it's impossible for "Jew couple" to be an abbreviation for "Jewish couple"?

This place does a bang up business, especially on late summer weekends. I'll guarantee you, that crowd will not be effected by this story. Steve Parkihill, who the restaurant is named after died unexpectedly not long ago. His steady hand is no longer steering the ship. The zoo crowd seems to be taking over. The before 10:00 dinner crowd will no longer be as well served.
Here is what is going on, IMHO. About 40 years ago Safardic Jews moved en mass to the neighboring town of Deal. These people were kicked out of Spain by Ferdinand and Isabella and then Kicked out of Syria with the founding of Israel in 1948. They ended up in Brooklyn and then Bradley Beach and then Deal in the summers only. Graduating classes in the grammer school went from 120 per grade to 10-15 in the space of 7 years. Their culture is very closed, for obvious historical reasons. They don't mix with people not their own. Deal used to be an Irish and European jewish town and there is still friction between the old guard and the "Syrians". In fact, I have often heard it said that the Eurpoean jews hate the "Syrians" more than the Irish. Cassin is a "Syrian" name. So there you have it.
Bwaghahaha.
"Posh," in this case, means "indoors."

"Dirty" was used in this case as an abbreviation for an old insult "dirty Jew." You have not heard it probably because you don't hang out with people that use it.
Here are some specifics, starting with the title:
'DIRTY' DISH ON N.J. 'JEW' EATERY Why do you think it was used? Because the author of the article knew the context: "dirty" stood for "dirty Jew."
A posh Jersey Shore eatery, under fire for referring to a pair of diners as a "Jew Couple" on their check
This happened much later after Joanne herself was insulted. Again, most people say "Jewish couple." Those that want to insult say "Jew boy," "Jew couple." Most importantly, of course, nobody views you as a customer as being Irish, or Italian, or Jewish --- unless it is important for them, unless they are prejudiced.
It looks like the restaurant has seen and condoned this behavior for a long time.
This is about a place that allows employees to make personal comments about patrons on documents. The management is obviously at fault. But it seems the chickens have finally come home to roost...
