I was wondering about the trunks, too. It looks as though the water pushed through the cars and popped them open. I thought it was interesting that the trunks on the shore side were more open than the ones across from them. Perhaps a difference in wave action or wind direction.

"It will end when one of them gets clubbed by a flying object."

I watched one reporter being thrown off his feet today. He deserved it.

Harrison County Mississippi is home (east to west) Biloxi, Keesler Air Force Base, Gulfport, Pass Christian. North of Biloxi is D'Iberville.

Apparently New Orleans has open treatment tanks, so the snakes might be less of a problem than other considerations.

"Anyone who takes advantage of this situation should have their heads cracked with nightsticks wielded by old fashioned, 1930's era, 250 lb Irish NYC cops."

The DUmmies are upset that the looters are being treated so badly. They really think we should let people loot. See the DUmmie FUnnies for the DUmmies own words.

This is something I've always wondered about and now I have confirmation.

From a website:
Floods can be both a cause of or an effect of an earthquake.
Flood water places an extra hydrostatic pressure on unstable and
mobile crustal blocks. If this extra pressure reaches the
threshold strain limit along a fault zone or plate boundary within
the Earth's crust, it can cause an earthquake to occur due to a
sudden release of the strain energy accumulated over time.
Similarly, an earthquake can change the surface drainage pattern
and consequently the course of a river, causing sudden flooding in
an area. Even though the cause and effect relationship between
floods and earthquakes is not very clear, historic records suggest
a relationship between these two phenomena. (http://www.cs.albany.edu/~amit/BanglaFloods.txt).

Scary thought. New Orleans isn't all that far away from the New Madrid fault!

Will the Media ask One Question for me?

How many people from the 9th ward (who made up the majority of those folks in the SuperDome, will now volunteer to help the National Guard with the Cleanup?

I will bet you the question does not get asked.
I will bet you the answer is ZERO

New Orleans is the Perfect Example of a Welfare State.
The folks in the Ninth Ward do ZERO except to Party, Vote for the people that will enhance their Welfare condition and on a Regular basis collect pretty good size Welfare Checks and just keep pumping out them babies.

I hope that at bare minimum that those folks have to do something other than just point to get their couch or TV replaced.

On the bright side the rig didn't hit either of the main suspension towers; those are where most of the time and effort of construction is. Replacing a section of suspended roadbed is (relatively) simple and fast, at least.

Suspension bridges require somewhat balanced loading on the towers to remain upright. With a cable-stay bridge like the one pictured, it's unlikely enough cables would get sheared to cause a major failure, but on a bridge with arch-shaped major cables supporting smaller verticals, a failure of one of the major cables on either side of the bridge can lead to a collapse of the entire structure.

I think more emergency planners need to realize that unless at least some shelters are set up to take pets, many people who are unable to evacuate will stay home to be with their pets. As it is now most shelters do not allow pets.
