I grew up with the connection between Nazis and the right so firmly implanted in my mind that I never questioned it. Only much later did I start to question this assumption.

It can't be said too often that the Nazis were National SOCIALISTS, and that Mussolini was trained as a Communist before he broke away to form his own party. Nazis and Communists were rivals, but they hated each other so much because they were so much alike. They both wanted to seize control in the name of the people and impose totalitarian state control on their countries. They spoke of progress toward a progressive Utopia, but their real interest was to seize and hold power for themselves over everyone else.

Actually, I think the issue between Fascists, National Socialists, and Communists was Nationalism. Fascists and Nazis were nationalists. Communism is "International Socialism."
