NEW ORLEANS A 2-year-old girl slept in a pool of urine. Crack vials littered a restroom. Blood stained the walls next to vending machines smashed by teenagers.
The Louisiana Superdome, once a mighty testament to architecture and ingenuity, became the biggest storm shelter in New Orleans the day before Katrina's arrival Monday. About 16,000 people eventually settled in.
By Wednesday, it had degenerated into horror. A few hundred people were evacuated from the arena Wednesday, and buses will take away the vast majority of refugees today.
"We pee on the floor. We are like animals," said Taffany Smith, 25, as she cradled her 3-week-old son, Terry. In her right hand she carried a half-full bottle of formula provided by rescuers. Baby supplies are running low; one mother said she was given two diapers and told to scrape them off when they got dirty and use them again.
At least two people, including a child, have been raped. At least three people have died, including one man who jumped 50 feet to his death, saying he had nothing left to live for.

sorry, you're deluding yourself again. Most people are ashamed to have someone like you on the board.
More people have told me the same than have come to your defense.
Should police have shot to kill all the looters they saw after the hurricane was over?
How many has that been, FOUR. Let's do a poll...see my post below.
People are ashamed of ME? You're just nuts, aren't ya?
No my point is that anytime you turn your life and liberty over to socialist govenment officials your screwed. They might tell you nice things, but the track record is pretty horrible.
I agree the Gov and Mayor are merely totally incompetence, and that incompetence has cost thousands, or tens of thousands to die, needlessly.
But the people themselves are even more to blame for listening to these people and relying on 'authority' to save them.
I got a sick feeling watching people line up to get in the superdome, especially hearing that everyone was disarmed by the National Guard. The NG took away peoples ability to defend themselves, and have failed to protect them once thay had them in custody. With hudreds of soldiers in a single stadium they somehow can't prevent rape? That's pretty pathetic, but par for the government course.
My example was not specifically on the Holocaust, but all times that "officials" tell you to line up, disarm, and act like a sheep.
The best response is to quietly turn and head in the other direction.
Like I said, if this were Iraq, everyone here would be screaming, 'shoot them!'. I bet the Iraqis are laughing at us right now because our own citizens are basically declaring war on each other. Worse, people are excusing it by simply saying, 'it happens.'
I bet the Saints leave town permanently.
I'm not condoning it...I'm just being realistic and saying in the whole scheme of things it was low priority yesterday. And no, I don't think people should be shot to death for looting.
It's my understanding that there was a problem with the toilets in the Superdome...probably all of the sewers are backing up because the whole place is flooded. It's disgusting that you are passing some high and mighty judgment on these people.
And what would you do if you had no toilet, pee your pants?
God. Comments like yours and some of the other heartless comments I've read regarding this tragedy make me feel ashamed to be an American. I think we should ship people such as yourself the hell out of here and let the victims stay at your damn houses! Pathetic.
Whatever, losers are losers in more ways than one.
The ungrateful to be alive are in sharp contrast to those victims who are carrying on with faith, hope, and a stiff upper lip, but the MSM avoids those like the plague.
I don't see how the Saints can even start the season this weekend, despite the fact they're on the road.
Settle down. Did you read the string of messages? Welfare checks ARE payday for these people. They don't have any other money (read: a means of procuring transportation, goods, etc.)
You're reading racism/classism where there is none. We're all deeply distressed.
You and Tsunamii (see post #4) need to back away from the news and FR for a minute, walk outside and breath in some fresh air and stop letting this thing consume you. Life goes on. You can either enjoy whats left of yours, or spend it wallowing in other people's misery. Everybody responds to tragedy differently. My post was obviously a poke at the conditions of the Superdome during sporting events and concerts. Any rational person would have seen that.
I know sarcasm when I see it, Rutles - and that post fit the bill perfectly. Note how nothing is mentioned about where people will get their paychecks sent to, or how they will be able to get money from their banks, or if the money in those banks in NO are destroyed. It's all about the 'looters and their welfare checks'. I've never seen such a general lack of sympathy or compassion in my life as I have on these FR threads the past few days.
I see your point, but it may not have been intended that way.
There are restrooms in the dome...just because you can't flush a stool, doesn't mean you can't pee in it. If you can't go outside, use a cup from one of the snack bars...use a sink...a bucket...a trashcan...a bottle or can. Good grief...I used a coffee can on the back porch late at night when I couldn't make it to the port-a-potty when we were moving. Need privacy? Use a coat or a blanket or even a trashbag to make a curtain. Some people really lack survival skills...
Use a cup from the snack bar? There are 23,000 people in there and you think they have enough cups and pails for everyone to stand in a line and pee in them for three or four days? I don't think you understand the magnitude of this situation.
These people rely on their welfare checks and social security to survive. THEY HAVE NO ADDRESS to send it to. How they going to get any money?
Just back off and try and digest what people are really saying before you condemn them to hell. Better yet, take a break from FR...forever.
