Considering the magnitude of the destruction and the lack of fuel to transport the dead bodies, and the destruction of the infrastructure, they have no choice but to either dig huge pits to bury them, or put the dead bodies in piles and burn the dead bodies.
If those relief and rescue people come across hundreds or thousands of bodies in one place and have no way to move then, let alone have time or resources to identify the dead bodies, they will have no choice but to burn them, to keep this from becoming a major health hazard ( not that it is already health hazard ).

Thank you, Homer1. At times like this, people may get distracted by little things (like the Superdome, the flooding) and miss out on what's really the central issue here. Thank you for reminding us that it's really about Terri Schiavo.

Some of these people are poor and some of the poor are poor because they don't have self-control. When times get a little tough, these people, not all poor people but the ones who are poor because they can't control their emotions long enough to make a plan of any use, start to come unwound. Worse than helpless, they actually get in the way. If they were in an army under duress, they would be left behind at the first opportunity.
