New Orleans mayor calm after talk with Bush

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - The cursing had stopped. The tears were gone. Mayor Ray Nagin returned from his meeting with President Bush a picture of calm.

He leaned back against a railing in a hotel lobby that for the first time in nearly five days was devoid of stranded, sweating, and generally miserable tourists.

"I feel much better. I feel like we've gotten everyone's attention and hopefully they'll continue to do what they're doing," Nagin said Friday night in the damaged downtown Hyatt hotel, where his temporary lodgings and command post have been set up since Hurricane Katrina made life in the Big Easy insufferable.

"I'm cautiously optimistic. I want to see it happen (Saturday). I want to see it happen next week. Then, when I see consistency of delivery, I'll feel like there's a light at the end of the tunnel."

His comments came a day after he was heard on a radio interview erupting in tears and telling the government to "get off your asses and let's do something." By nightfall Friday, his tone had changed.

"Today was a turning point, I think," he said. "My philosophy is never get too high, never get too low. ... I always try to keep my emotions in check and yesterday I kind of went off a little bit. I was worried about that, but it maybe worked out.'"'

Nagin said Bush gave him a hearty greeting and did not seem at all offended by Nagin's earlier outburst. Bush spent Friday on a daylong tour of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana.

"I do think the pleas for help basically got the nation's attention, and the nation's attention got everybody to stop and re-evaluate what was going on, including the president. ... He basically said, 'Look, our response was not what it should have been and we're going to fix it right now.'"

The mayor asked Bush to focus on helping New Orleans with law enforcement, finishing the evacuation and draining the flooded city. He said New Orleans also needs a fleet of crop dusters to spray the city for mosquitos that could spread disease after hatching from the stagnant water that has swamped most of the city since Monday.

President Bush to Nagin:

"Good afternoon, sir. Are you familiar with the Internal Revenue Service?"

The problem is, lady, that he shirked his responsibility BEFORE the hurricane.

Then he was silent.

Then he was screaming that this was the President's fault (when the only reason ANYTHING was done was because of the President).......... and now he's saying that his rant against the President got people's attention, when real work was already being done to save the people stranded due to his inaction, only BECAUSE of the President's action.

I personally don't have much sympathy for his 'going off a bit.'

But, I'll tell you one thing. President George W. Bush is a remarkable man to treat his tormentors with such great respect. We need to keep praying for him! May God bless and protect him from his enemies.

I think Mayor Nagin's MSM star will fall rapidly. The MSM now has a new non-white-male hero to blab about incessantly: Gen. Honore. I wondered why Nagin was praising this guy so much yesterday. CNN can't get enough of him.

I don't know anything about Gen Honore. He may be the right guy to get the job done.

I wonder if President Bush very kindly told the mayor (while smiling for the cameras), "Look, Nagin, we know all about you. The dossier is three inches thick. We know what to leak to the press, and at what rate....now settle down, and let's get this fixed."

can't imagine the horror of being in that area, so I suppose he has to be given a pass for going off a bit.
_____________________________________________________

He gets no pass.....his actions greatly contributed to the death toll by not decisively insuring the evacuation of large numbers of his citizens. The shots of hundreds of flooded school buses that weren't used to get the people who didn't have transportation out of the city infuriate me. This guy lives there, he knows his people and what their needs are. Telling them to go to the dome was asinine and short sighted. I'm sure that's why many people stayed, choosing to ride out the storm for a couple of days at the superdome, then go back home. They needed leadership, that this guy didn't provide. And then to attack the relief effort for the slow response is just too slick for words.

I can imagine that the conversation went something like this:

"Nagin, you have shown yourself as a completely incompetent asshole since this storm hit. The best thing you can do for yourself is to keep your effing mouth shut, nod your head when I speak and smile and shake hands at the correct time. And Nagin, you don't and you'll find your self so far out of the loop that you won't even be able to see the street lights when I turn them on."

This mayor, a blow hard jerk, dropped the ball miserably he was ill prepared and showed no leadership at all. Compare him with the job Rudy did at 9/11. The mayor's job was to hold the city together and he failed. Now he's trying to cover his own failure by blaming Bush. I don't see any media examining the lst and 2nd lines of defense but they're quick to go after Bush. Of course the reason for blaming Bush is because the mayor is a black democRAT while the gov. is a white DemocRAT.

This guy had an opportunity to show the world that he could be a Rudy...instead the bash Bush policy overruled the day. I truly despise people who won't take responsibility for there own failures and blame others

My SIL told me yesterday that everyone in her office believes "it's Bush's fault" and she can't seem to get through to them...then she was in the grocery store and several people in line were saying how it was Bush's fault and one guy said he bet there was no one around them who still supported Bush and my brave SIL raised her hand and said she did because she knew the MSM was trying to place the blame on Bush instead of the city and state officials who are responsible for evacuations, etc. Only one person responded that the federal government is responsible for that...she put down her groceries and left...was too sick by these stupid folks to stand any longer with them.

Our local paper prints the AP lies--"Scorched by the criticism about sluggish federal help, Bush acknowledged the government's failure to stop lawlessness and help desperate people in New Orleans"...I guess the media thinks that this wouldn't have happened if a Clinton was in charge..he would have had four Navy ships in the gulf waiting to come in and the NG would have been right there in the middle of the storm...regardless that these ships would have been destroyed and NG folks probably killed in the storm...at least he would have CARED enough to send them ON TIME! That's the mentality of these folks--they have said this to my husband at his work...all the emergency aid should have been there BEFORE the storm!

It seems everyone including republicans are joining in on the blame Bush train --

from our local paper:

Senator Landrieu: "The president is starting to grasp the magnitude of the situation." Anyone have a clue when she will????

Newt: "If we can't respond faster than this to an event we saw coming across the Gulf for days, then why do we think we're prepared to respond to a nuclear or biological attack?"

Foley: calls it an embarrassment...

There were more statements than these above...our paper has yet to print any articles condemning the state and local government! Maybe the republicans mean the "local" government when they say government but I doubt it...the entire article was dedicated to how sorry a job Bush has done, his sagging poll numbers, etc. I really believe this is all a ploy by the MSM to destroy the republican party before the next election...I mean even if the feds screwed up to some extent...why can't they be honest and spread the blame around????

The democrats are now going to BS that their irrational screaming cause the president to be "logical".

I think it is hysterical and humiliating to democrats that the NO government is going to be ASSUMED stealing federal money into personal pockets. It is assumed crony corruption will direct too.

(..And yet they want us to "donate generously".)

Rank and file Democrats should be embarased and leave the party.

I agree that mock impeachment hearings are likely, and the real ones will occur if the GOP loses the House and/or Senate in 2006. It won't matter who did or didn't take action on Katrina, the blame will be laid at the President's feet.

Won't happen, because then the President can defend himself, and the truth will come out as to who really is at fault. The Rats can't afford that.

Excellent point. The Rat 'leaders' cannot afford for the truth to come out.

They will make noise, but they will not start any impeachment proceedings.

They're evil, but they're not stupid.
