Made the mistake of going to CNN. They had some pompous talking head, CNN Reporter, going after Chernoff, asking if he should be fired. I thought the reporter should be fired. No mention of the incompetence of the locals. I'm furious.

It's beginning to look like creating a big, bureaucratic agency like homeland security may have been in some respects a mistake. If FEMA natural disaster response/relief planning/preparation has taken a serious backseat to anti-terror plans, it is a mistake. One report I've seen (from a WashPost story) has it going from a cabinet level agency to just one of many in the new DHS, where it has to compete for funds and attention until something like this happens.

Who do these people think they are to speak to other people like that?

"Maybe some cities and states shouldn't be allowed to have any local governance by law... the Feds should be able to take over direct control. That's what I'm learning from all this."

Chernoff hinted something to that effect on Wolfie's show just a little while ago.

What if Jeb Bush had handled Florida last year, like she has LA????

They would have ripped Jeb apart

I too am surprised that no one is talking about the role played by the NO & LA Officials

"I vote for "Meet the DNC""

I'm partial to RUSH's "Meed the Depressed"

Go here:

http://transcripts.cnn.com/TRANSCRIPTS/0509/02/acd.01.html

and find the part where Anderson Cooper talked to Trent Lott.

I am telling you, I feel the same way about Lott, but he wiped the floor with Cooper. He literally gave him a lesson in hurricanes and relief efforts.

And he did it in that good old boy Southern way........I almost stood up and cheered!

Right off the plate Russert asked Chertoff who was going to resign over this [delay]. As a lawyer Russert knows the law and that President Bush was limited in what he could do in LA until Blanco requested his aid. As one who purports to be a journalist, he should report that fact. He didn't. Thus he is a failure both as a lawyer and as a media flack. The question is....When will HE resign?

Here's an example of the gross exaggeration we've been hearing. Geraldo first said 30,000 were trapped in the convention center. Then he said 25,000, yesterday he revised it to 10,000.
Just saw the real number on Fox....4,500.

Great letter. I thought all senators had an email, though I've read on FR that sometimes snail mail gets read more.
Just a couple of suggestions - I believe there is a 'd' in her name (Landrieu). Also, in the last sentence, I personally would delete the 'will' - as many currently do feel the same way you do.

Great job!

Don't forget that her brother is Lt. Governor of that great state of LA.

Did he show up at all through this? (Or is he in an undisclosed location with the LA state legislature?)

The facts and laws don't seem to come into play in this story.

As I've said before, the mayor should know his constituents are poor and many of them rely solely on public transportation. OTOH - there were literally TONS of cars under water everywhere. Where were the people that owned those cars and why didn't they use them to evacuate? Perhaps, because the mayor and gov waited until the Pres asked them to evacuate and then didn't tell them to evacuate soon enough or strongly enough????!!!

'The primary means of hurricane evacuation will be personal vehicles. School and municipal buses, government-owned vehicles and vehicles provided by volunteer agencies may be used to provide transportation for individuals who lack transportation and require assistance in evacuating'...

Heavy......... could you computer whizzes put that quote beside that picture of all the buses!?

Might be on the cover of TIME or NEWSWEEK magazine! (Uhuh!)

thanks for the link Trent Lott came up trumps for once, especially showing how people have to self help they cannot expect it to be handed to them all the time.

IMHO those people know the people who would stay would include the criminal element and they feared their properties would be ransacked if they were not damaged.

They weighed the 2 up and unfortunately got it wrong.
