Nagin said slow response cost lives (Mayor Nagin slams Gov. Blanco)
New Orleans Times-Picayune (excerpt) ^ | September 4, 2005

Frustrated and grieving, Mayor Ray Nagin on Sunday again ripped the painfully slow response of state and federal authorities to the plight of tens of thousands of stranded New Orleanians in the days following Hurricane Katrina, saying their inaction cost lives and caused needless misery.

Nagin singled out Gov. Kathleen Blanco for criticism, saying that the governor had asked for 24 hours to think over a decision when time was a luxury that no one, especially refugees, had.

“When the president and the governor got here, I said, 'Mr. President, Madame Governor, you two have to get in synch. If you don't, more people are going to die.”

Blanco and Bush met privately at his insistence, Nagin said, after which Bush came out and told Nagin that he had given Blanco two options, and she requested a full day to decide.

“It would have been great if we could have walked off Air Force One and told the world we had it all worked out,” Nagin said. “It didn't happen, and more people died.”

Once again, it's all about Ray. He makes it sound like he ordered the PRESIDENT, the most powerful man in the world, to meet with the governor. Almost like they're little kids and he's the adult. As IF!

The former Clinton crony is James Witt, former head of FEMA, who coincidentally just made a cool half million not too long ago when he helped Louisiana and/or NO with their evacuation plans. Sounds like he's being brought in again to cover up any tracks...

She is probably shitting her pants now. Unless the MSM can convince everyone its Bush's fault, which so far they haven't according to that poll they just conducted. I can't even believe they are so arrogant to test that at this point. Why I can't believe that is a mystery too..

Blanco's actions are incredibly negligent. The demonRATs are playing this situation with the help of their MSM enablers (the propaganda arm of the DNC) in the hopes of tarring the president. It won't work.

Note that this pic is of city transit buses.

The Mayor had access to them, but he didn't bother to use them, either.

LOL You got that right. Thats exactly the options she was given , and it took her 24 hours to make up her mind to that.
Maybe she should phone Hillary and ask her what to do?

Many of the rescues I watched yesterday featured people reluctant or downright refusing to leave, even now, and they had cars parked in front of or beside their houses.

The hundreds of school and city buses parked just blocks from the Superdome says it all. Criminal negligence coupled with gross incompetence mostly due to the mayor and the gov created this human disaster. I'm sure all the Bush-haters are trying mighty hard to avoid looking at those photos.

I think she also had pressure from below, powerful local leaders

I'm not going to say I understand LA politics that much, but I do know a good ole boy aristocracy is still very well entranced there. Now someone needs to ask Sheriff Lee of Jefferson Parish why he blocked I-10 East with barricades so none of the riffraff could get into his Parish.

If I was one of those conspiratorial type individuals, and I took a look back across everything that happened, its almost as if they were going to use this natural disaster, and lull Bush into a slow response. Then hit him with the nasty press coverage we saw later in the week. Thank goodness I am not one of those conspiratorial types.

That sounds like you've given yourself a tin foil enema.

My best recollection is that not once, in all of the times CNN has had Nagin on air, has Nagin ever spoken in anything but generalities-- about anything. He is so full of fertilizer thatit's coming out his ears, and CNN speaks of him as though he were a hero.

Still, I wonder what the Gov. wanted 24hrs to think about. Bush gave her a couple of unspecified options. What were they?

Bush was asking for legal authorization to federalize the entire operation. The stupid silly Governor needed to think about it!!!! The Posse Comitas Act makes federal troops being used for state police action illegal.

Bush needed her authorization to bypass the act

Negative. The governor cannot waive a federal law. It's over her head.

What Blanco refuses to give up is pieces of her command and control structure. She has the power and authority to order LA National Guard to support in any way she sees fit - so, how did she deploy her own resources? She has compacts will other states, wehre they argree to send their resoureces. When and how did she take advantage of that resource?

None of those questions approach crossing the Possee Comitas line, which forbids using active-duty military to perform civilian police function.

What about all the New Orleans' buses, Mr. Naggin?

You could have started evacuating people on your own!

The citizens of LA have so much on their minds, but certainly one day the Governor should be recalled and if an election occurs before that then she needs to be replaced.
