Perhaps this is Nagin's feeble attempt at a face-saving (in his opinion) way to get his police out of the way so the feds can do the job right? I'm sure they are insisting that they are still in charge, but in reality, they may be quietly ceding control to the grownups.

I was thinking the exact same thing. It is the only thing that makes any sense at all.

FDNY and NYPD weren't leaving their family homes under 12 feet of water to rush to the WTC.

What difference does that make?

These guys took an oath to serve. They abandoned their posts when that oath required them to protect their fellow citizens.

The NOPD is, and always has been, a shameful outfit. Several years ago, an expose proved that more than just a couple were actually murdering New Orleans citizens, stealing money, and accepting bribes.

I'm not at all surprised that desertion was rampant.

And now, to be swept out of town for some pampering ought to be embarrassing for any police officer.

Meanwhile, the National Guard, made up of doctors, lawyers, accountants, truck drivers, and cab drivers, have given up THEIR jobs to keep the order that the NOPD failed to.

The corrupt and gutless NO city government has been exposed for the entire world to see.

He said they will rotate them. When these come back he will send others.
That is how I understood it.

I saw the looting officers on one of my brief trips to MSNBC. Had the surroundings been a little different...not so messy...you'd of thought they were on a normal shopping trip. Picking items off the shelf, examining them, put some back, put some in the cart.....while all the time the other looters are cleaning the shelves completely ignoring the cops and the cops ignoring them. It was unbelieveable.

As for Nagin and his vacations for the cops.....I am so outraged I can't stand it. I am also sick to death of the filthy mouth on Nagin. What a PIG!

Lastly, FEMA purchased or leased 3 cruise ships to house the people currently housed in Houston, BUT, the people housed in Houston don't want to go. They say THIS is now HOME. Looks like they think they got squatters rights....with benefits. Houston has bought itself one huge headache, and it has just begun.

This would be like discounted Disney cruises being given to the NYPD and FDNY while people were still trapped and injured in the WTC rubble.

I agree.

It is unseemly.

I am married to a LEO/first responder.....two years ago during Hurricane Isabelle, I was left alone with my kids while my husband responded and went out to HELP people and do his JOB. It's my opinion that all first responder families should PLAN on being ON THERE OWN during any emergency that their first responder will be called out on. You learn to be self reliant.

These LEO's take an oath to protect the public good. I know my husband takes that oath very seriously....trust me...I spend any emergencies in our area (hurricanes, etcc...) alone. And I've learned to grow up and deal with it.

Sending these NOPD to vegas or whatever is disgusting in my opinion. And the mayor is just a first class, self-absorbed ass.

there...I feel a bit better now. although, i am still ranting i suppose.

What self-respecting cop would agree to this only a week after the carnage? They would either stay to help (as they should and were trained to do), or at least go mourn quietly somehwere.

Exactly. I'd love to see the New York City / NYPD response to this bit of news.

The runaway bride could have handled this better. Or same. Bus to Vegas, spend, spin.

1. I keep hearing about the looting cops, but have seen NO hard news on the subject. Is this confirmed? Are there pictures? Were they caught? Shot? Somebody please enlighten me.

Here is the thread about the article on the subject that was in the New Orleans paper. We can't post articles from that paper so you have to go to their site. Because of the flood, I guess, everything is just one long column, so when you get there, just enter "Even a cop" in the your browser search box. Otherwise you will have to scroll down a long way to find the article.

I watched it on TV--live--and could NOT believe what I was seeing. It would have been funny--but many people died because of the failure of the police to do their job.

These folks are under the jurisdiction of FEMA. Stop asking and start ORDERING people to disperse, whether they want to or not.

Those who have the means to leave are free to go, but those who are relying on the generosity of the federal government should have no say in the matter.

"Mayor of Atlanta raised funds on her own to entertain the cops"

I guess some people think there are more pressing needs for fundraising right now. Instead of helping the victims, lets give the cops a vacation. Who knows, maybe there will be a DNC fundraiser for Louisiana elected officials who are emotionally scarred. If there is any money left over, then they'll give it to the victims--if they vote Democrat.

As much as this disaster has shown the compassion and selflessness of so many people all over the country AND of entire states, like Texas, it has also uncovered the despicable, selfish, and completely oblivious people running the city of New Orleans and the state of Louisiana.

Aren't some of the NYPD in New Orleans helping out right now? This is disgusting.

I saw television footage of them looting about a day after the hurricane. Don't remember where, but they were definitely uniformed cops.

The elderly and single moms were to be housed on the cruise ships. They said they feel safe in the Astrodome and they are waiting on news from family members. For all we know, the FOX reporterette talked to 2 people who said they wanted to stay put. It's not possible to lump all together unless all have been interviewed. But the media will spin it that ALL are refusing to leave. I despise the MSM...

The city is under water. There is chaos and mayhem everywhere, and his solution is to send his police force to Las Vegas for some R&R?

Am I in the Twilight Zone? Is this for real?
