Tenacious, I wouldn't bother with Payne's book. His conclusions are based on a study done by Arthur D. Little in the early 80s (a little out of date, wouldn't you think). That study by ADL has been widely discredited as has Payne's conclusions. They are grossly exaggerated.

A better book would be "Taxing Ourselves - Third Edition : A Citizen's Guide to the Debate over Taxes" by Joel Slemrod and Jon Bakija. It's a much more reasonable look at our tax system.

Notice how quickly they jump on the work of those who's conclusions do not comport with what THEY are selling. Also note that they fail to tell you just WHO has done all this so called discrediting and what THEIR agendas are!

Read the book and judge for yourself!

Keep in mind should you read Slemrod's book that he is one of the left-wing sources cited in the MONEY magazine article along with William Gale of Brookings Institute.

He's about as conservative as Gale, also, and about as reliable a source of information. If you'd check the FairTax website, you'll find under the "Rebuttals" tab a rebuttal for several things - among them some of the very things pushed by Gale.
