I don't think an Aztlan shirt would last long in my hometown. In fact, when the whold "chicano" Aztlan thing started in the '70s, my dad was employing a bunch of high school kids in his little side construction business. Some of the hispanic ones got into this Aztlan/Brown Beret stuff and refused to stand and say the Pledge of Allegiance at school when it came over the loudspeaker. My dad heard about it and fired them.

Why does anyone expect free speech on PRIVATE forum sites anymore?
Because they sell themselves as open forums.
That is what attracts posters and gives them traffic. They typically tolerate just enough dissent from the party line to keep a few rabble rousers alive. Just to keep something that looks like a discussion going. In fact no discussion of the facts will be tolerated on any forum.

What makes a poster a rebel depends on the forum.

Interesting. A columnist for the paper at the university I attend wrote an extremely bigoted article mocking Catholics. Am I justified now in beating the crap out of him, or is this just another case of it being dependent upon who is offended? Hey, they were fighting words.

Believe me, there are times when I agree that a good punch in the kisser can straighten things out. I am just pointing out that we are quicker to "not side" with the freedom of speech issue on "this issue" than if it were anything else. I believe the white kid did this to get a rise out the other students- to perhaps see how much he could get away with. I doubt that ANYONE in an American public school wouldn't expect to get at least what he did for wearing the racist shirt. I just think that we either want free speech or we don't. Also, we need to make sure we apply the same logic to other similar situations.

I agree. But, I heard someone make the comment about the burning of the stars and stripes. He that burns the flag, has the right to do so, freedom of speech and all, but I have the right to punch him in the face. Both kids should be punished, at least a few days off from school. Nothing more, since both were standing up for their rights.
