Rescue and recovery workers returning from New Orleans say they've found a shocking number of victims who died - not from Hurricane Katrina's floodwaters - but from gunshot wounds and other forms of violence apparently inflicted by gangs who terrorized the city after the storm struck.......

Exactly and state Senator Cleo Fields was just on MSNBC with Tucker Carlson blasting the Red Cross for not going in. Said he was there 5 days driving buses and was never shot at. He said it was not that dangerous and even if it would have been that is no excuse not to help people. He makes me sick!

Didn't Cleo buy himself his own bus with taxpayers money? Why didn't he use it to evacuate the people in New Orleans?

In all due respect, given several articles on the subject I've seen tonight in believable publicans and my post #9 and then #17... I think this congressman is blowing smoke and it wasn't safe for Red Cross to go into the city.

I'm not defending the Red Cross for their services. The fact is it was dangerous and Blanco did nothing to aid any of those trying to get in the city and help. I don't blame the Red Cross or any other organization for not wanting to go in because they would be shot at.

I wonder how many were part of M13? Isn't this their MO?

It does sound like many people were murdered by gang-bangers, but all of the video I saw showed mainly black thugs running wild in the city, not latino thugs that would make up a gang like M13. That's not to say they weren't there, just that I saw no evidence of it, and have read nor heard anything to support that idea.

Oliver Thomas on WWL radio said tonight "we have billions over 250 billion coming to NO, with that kind of money we can rebuild the Superdome. He said he wants Bush to exempt all income tax on individuals in NO for one year, also property and sales tax for one year, state income tax too....however he wants Bush to reimburse the city/state for the amount of property, sales and state income tax these individuals would have been paid".

See post 14 for a perspective on that.

I just don't like how the RC conveniently "pockets" a good bit of the donations.

Did you see Col. Hunts report tonight on O'Reilly? He's been investigating this and reported that gangs came in from all over the country with boats and SUV's...Caught the segment - he came right out and said several times that the corruption of the police force and city was a major factor in what happened - police force had only three boats, and two of them didn't work, and they had no communication facilities until three days after the hurricane hit - not only did Nagin and the city fail to follow their own emergency plan, they weren't ready for even common, everyday incidents - the llves of hundreds were lost because of this outrageoous and criminal lack of preparation.......

I am sick of these whiny "displaced persons".....do they really expect that after living on a flood plain/disaster waiting to happen that they are going to just be given money to make them whole?

there is no constitutional right to get free money when a disaster hits.....

the amount of cheating and stealing going on now IMO is probably in the millions.....

makes me really want to give money again.....right...

I'll bet plenty of personal, neighbor, ex-lover and family feuds were privately settled by bang-bang during the chaos.....not only gang turf and drug fights.

Glad you brought this up.
Somebody please clarify for me: It is the initial responsibility of the GOVERNOR to call out the National Guard in an emergency like this, is it not?
The president does not have authority to call out the National Guard in an individual state, does he?
Maybe somebody knows where the exact wording of the law is on this.

What it sounded like to me. I remember hearing a week ago that many of the gangs were organizing before the storm even hit... though I don't know how that would explain the boats.

Col. Hunt said the local police was only able to get two boats in the water initially. He talked about how they holed up during the day and came out at night, which coincides with the article in another paper on Friday the 2nd which talked about gang members holding people hostage at a school, taking their food, shoes, etc., and then they would go out at night on raids.

Yup.

If they'd even just read the Bible, [never mind commonsense architectural guidelines] it says something about the fool who builds his house on sand.
I can't begin to guess at how much fraud is taking place right now.

Dick Morris on O'Reilly yesterday, his words "I can't believe why people so surprised what's going on in New Orleans, it's been the most CORRUPTED state in the union!!!"

That makes sense. I always thought that a lot of those who stayed did so to loot.

If I lived in CA the first thing I would do is cancel my earthquake insurance. If I lived on the coast, I'd never get flood insurance.

Big government will now pay you for being irresponsible. The less you do for yourself the more they'll do for you.

Oh you should have heard local radio this am. People calling and saying insurance companies should have to pay for those who chose not to have flood insurance. If you live in a bowl and choose not to buy flood insurance, too bad.

we need to Freep this poll.

I do not know how or where to post a thread for this.

I was listening to that. Col.Hunt said 3,000 looters were on hand to help clean up out the city. Many came from out of state, driving SUV's with their own weaponry. Some also came by boat. The cops only had one boat that was operational.

(I suppose the out-of-staters heard about the bluelight special on diapers and french bread at Wallyworld.)

I saw a doctor (Henderson, I think, was his name) last night on tv.

He was the only dr. at the convention center, just decided to go there on his own, was in town for a meeting -- he had nothing but a stethoscope with him.

He said there were between 30 and 40 people killed there at the CC.

Also on the same program (can't remember which program, but either on Fox or cnn) there was a man who was stuck in the CC, he said there were 2 kinds of hell there. The daytime hell and the nighttime hell.

During the day, the gang members would check out which women they wanted to get that night. Then when it got dark, they would start firing their weapons, whip everyone into a panic, then while everyone was panicking, they would nab the women they had decided to rape that night, would drag them off to the restrooms, kicking and screaming.

The doctor said he knew there was one 6 year old girl who died from the trauma of the rape. Also there were others who had their throats cut.
