Feds, Mayor Disagree Over New Orleans Reopening

Monday, September 19, 2005

NEW ORLEANS — Mayor Ray Nagin's plan to officially reopen parts of New Orleans on Monday drew criticism from federal officials and health-care experts who warned that city services might not be able to handle the influx of people.

Nagin said residents may start returning to Algiers, a section of the city across the Mississippi River from downtown New Orleans that saw little damage from Hurricane Katrina (search).

Has Nagin made one correct decison in the last 2 months? This seems like a bad idea---officially opening parts of the city this soon.

Folly; sheer political hubris. Nagin has realized he is a mayor without a constituency; he presides over a waterlogged, defunct hellhole.

The city is still dangerous and the infrastructure not yet fully functional. The problems are too numerous to list here, but it is an insane plan on its face.

It's a ploy. The DNC called him, told him he needed to make more of a distraction away from the earlier failure of his administration and that of the governor (both DNC flunkies).

So, hopefully, for Blanco and Nagin attention will turn to what the feds cannot do and also make the "feds" look inept/unsympathetic because they will adamantly refuse the mayors idiotic position on repopulating NOLA too soon. It's exactly what that buffoon Nagin wants.

Sad.

Nagin is an idiot. That is a permanent condition.

With possibly another hurricane (Rita) headed in this general direction, New Orleans is by no means secure even yet. Rita could hit the coast in that general area even as a Cat 2, and do enormous mischief to the weakened levee system, putting the city right back at Square One on the pump-out.

If the city is filled with people living in unlivable conditions, then he can cry out that he needs the Federal funds to take care of the people. Nagin shell game to follow. Follow the money.

What a moron.

Does he think this will cause his former constituents to forget the last three weeks and come running back? I think not.

I'm involved with helping an extended family get back on its feet after having fled the city. None of them plan to return and have decided to stay here where they're trying to start over. Although they believe parts of the city will be rebuilt and will be safer, their decision is due, in part, to lack of faith in local and state leaders like this idiot.

The city should become a federal protectorate for the next 25 years or until sanity is restored.

The Feds should lay the cards on the table with Nagin, blanco and other interested parties all at the same table. State why they residents should not return just yet. Lay out the dos and don'ts and film it so all the world can see. Then lay the decision at the feet of the brilliant nagin with some help from the even more brillant blanco. It's their city and state and their decision. Then when things go horribly wrong there will be those two responsible. Just like they were responsible for not preparing properly before the storm hit when the Feds wanted them to. Remember?

Even worse, I just heard a news clip that Nagin said something like "The Admiral thinks he's the federal mayor king now" or some such nonsense.

The guy is overwhelmingly incompetent, and a raving lunatic to boot!!

Nagins like the owner of a burned-down nightclub who violated every building code in the books.

He should be in jail instead of in 'fronta the camera's.

Only this time the levee system might be totally destroyed and New Orleans would be under water forever. I can't believe he wants to let people back in with another storm brewing and who knows how many after that. Has anyone told nagin we are still in hurricane season?

Bob Beckel, Dem Consultant, also just said on Fox News that evacuation of N.O. was the resonsibility of FEMA and the Federal government, not Ray Nagin. And yes, he said it with a straight face.

What's really driving Nagin?

Proverbs 14:28 -- "In a multitude of people is a king's honor, But in the lack of people is the downfall of a prince." (NKJV)

In other words, without people, he has no political power.

I heard that too. Nagin accused the Admiral of trying to take over while he was gone for several days. While Nagin's been out in Texas setting up home, the feds have been doing all the work in his city. Then he has the nerve to come back and cry like a baby over it. His comments were outrageous. He has said some stupid stuff, but I think that was the worse.

People should make their decisions like this: Whatever Nagin says, do the opposite. Then you know you'll be making a smart move.
