Time for a Dunkirk? Maybe the authorities could ORGANIZE volunteers from outlying areas to stage in organized areas, then shuttle people from the interstate to these staging areas so fellow Americans can take them to designated areas?
At least get them off the interstate.
Every time I see something like this, I think the military types need to be in charge of these types of operations. They are expert at planning.
FEMA needs to be revamped to be a military-type organization with an other-than-warfighting mission.

Yesterday at the local Wal-Mart, I stopped to hand some spare cash to a schoolgirl, who was taking donations for Katrina relief. I talked to the kid's teacher, thanking her for spearheading this.
She told me the "government" had failed the folks in Mississippi. Rather than fuss at her, I reminded her that "WE" are the government, and that we as individuals can and must help.
The donations are going to an individual Mississippi middle school, where a friend of the local teacher works.

Amen. These two hurricanes have NOT strengthened my faith in people in times of crisis.
We have an evac plan to use back-roads if possible, but I think everyone ought to plan on having to evacuate on foot if need be. Grab some gear, put on some hiking boots, and head for the hills - getting as far away from other people as possible. Large groups of people only beget crime, panic, and madness - no thank you.
How long will it take for them to burn those 5 gallons of gas sitting still on the highway?
Can you imagine trying to evacuate New York? They couldn't even get two large buildings evacuated in time. And look at typical traffic chaos in any big city on a weekday, whether NY, LA, Atlanta, Houston, wherever. It's already gridlocked when there is no emergency. There's little point in asking millions to jump into the fray at the same time. If you're in the city, you're in the city. Hope you prepared ahead.
So if a family had 3 vehicles, they split up and took them all. Traffic planners didn't anticipate that. No one wanted to leave a car behind to the flood. So now they will park them on the shoulder or the median as they run out of gas and pack into one car, as they should have all along.
If any of them have gas and a map, they can take Rt 71 south for about 15 miles and then US Hwy 90 Alt, south and west from there.
I'm assuming the bus carrying the elderly people that caught fire and exploded did so because the driver had to ride his brakes for 500 miles.
I haven't heard what they are doing with the folks in the Astrodome.

I agree with you. You CAN'T evacuate a major city w/o problems and it will take days and days to do it. It's no one's fault.
'Yup'! You got it. Gotta make some kind of plan to help yourself. In the big cities though, many if not most, will not make it through a mega disaster - fact of life.
I'm not understanding this thread. When I go to the Houston highway cameras I don't see the thousands of cars that I saw last night, in fact the roads look almost empty. Where is all this congestion?
Here in Dallas, people have also been panicking...IN DALLAS!!! Gas lines were huge yesterday, people buying CASES of water (as if Dallas would lose its water supply). Its stupid.
The general overall tone coming out of Washington DC is that we are not to worry, that The Govmint will handle the war and that we can just go about our lives.
Sorry, the Government needs us, far more than we need it.

I agree. However, I must temper my comments these days -- people are literally dangerous if you disagree with them. If you mention that animals are not as important as people, well, words do not exist in the Engish language to describe you.
