Seven Mile Bridge leading to lower Keys closed after crash

The Associated Press

October 03, 2005

The Seven Mile Bridge, connecting the Florida Keys, was closed Monday after a fatal tanker crash.

A tanker truck transporting gasoline was traveling south on the bridge around 5 p.m when the driver lost control and collided with a sport utility vehicle, causing a fire, said Lt. Pat Santangelo, the Florida Highway Patrol's spokesman.

The male drivers of the truck and the SUV died, while a female passenger in the SUV was air lifted to Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami in serious condition Monday evening, Santangelo said.

Firefighters battled the blaze for about two hours before it was extinguished. The bridge will be closed at least until Tuesday evening for cleanup, Santangelo said

Thank you for the post on the truck accident in Florida.

I do not believe that all these gas trucks are loosing control, Bill drove the Mobil gas truck -local and short hops to deliver, and a friend Bernie also drove the big one.

I can promise you, that neither of them ran around loosing control.

Maybe in the late 1970's there was a gas shortage and if Bill had to take a run to one of the small towns, nearby, it got so bad that his boss rode with him, with a shot gun.

Several times people tried to run him off the road, or force him to stop, then it would have been a stolen gas truck.

They tried running him off the road and stopping him with cars, they didn't know that Bill was one of those tunnel vision people, if his job was to deliver a load of gas, that is what he did......

Once they tried blocking the roadway with a couple cars, he slowly kept driving, pushed them out of the way and never stopped. His truck was a old one, made out of iron and didn't dent........LOL

In those days there the cell phones had not been invented, but they did finally put a CB in the trucks.

Some one is forcing these trucks to have accidents.

The normal cargo carrier runs longer hours and for longer periods of time, I can understand them going to sleep, or taking too many pills to stay awake.
