"If so, and the burnt matches somehow didn't get blown away in the blast, it proves that this fellow was determined to kill himself at this spot, at this time"

OR..someone was threatening him with a bomb and lighting matches to scare him and accidently or on purpose lite the final one. ??? Remember two men were seen running from the scene.

Don't underestimate the anger jusssst under the surface seething that we hold against those that will kill us. Most are waiting for that spark that will set into motion something that our government will not be able to control. They can't lock tens of millions of Americans up. How will they stop millions of Americans from seeking retribution? When it gets to the point where the government cares more for those who are trying to murder us than it does for it's innocent citizens...

I can't tell you how many people I know have expressed the exact same thing.

My sister's college sorority did a lot candle lighting ceremonies. My first thought on this was a group of people lighting candles and perhaps saying a prayer for the deceased.

It's out there alright. Some just choose to ignore it. Maybe it's too unsettling for them to acknowledge.

Hadn't thought of that, although if the police tape was still, up they could not have had their ceremony there. who knows..the press sure doesn't seem to care. (rolling eye)

I didn't agree with you but believe you have the right to say whatever you feel is right in your heart.

I read your posts and usually agree with most (95%)of them.

I am glad your on FR.

Don't be to upset with me because I happen to disagree with you on this one.

Thanks for that idea. The matches didn't make sense to me. If they were there from the blast I'd think the Feds would have taken them as evidence. But I hadn't thought of a reasonable alternative explanation.

A relative of mine works as a department head at the University.

She says some of the students that knew this nut are saying that he had leanings towards the antiwar terrorists supporters.

Just hearsay for now but if he did have literature from Muslim groups that may explain some of why he blew himself to smithereens.

These terrorists suicide bombers are certainly mentally ill.

Yep, you're right. No response and information regarding the injured is now missing from the article... Go figure, eh? I did copy and pasted the article when I found it as well as the URL, but it didn't occur to me to get a screen shot (unfortunate mistake on my part as it will be hard to prove to skeptics that it was there in the first place).

Was it a mistake in the article? My feeling is it was not as this was an article attributed to a real person vs. the AP and the officials probably don't want to let on that there were witnesses close enough to get hurt... May be a good thing if they consider those witnesses to be in danger...

NEWS ARTICLE EDITED @ CFRA RE: REPORT OF 5 INJURED

I was able to find the article on the CFRA website earlier this afternoon. Following is the copied and pasted text of the article as it appeared at 4:18pm today:

Blast Rocks University of Oklahoma Campus, 1 Killed
http://www.cfra.com/headlines/index.asp?cat=2&nid=32534
Darren McEwen
Sunday, October 02, 2005 12:50 AM
One person is dead and five others are injured following an explosion on the campus of the University of Oklahoma.
The blast occurred not far from a football stadium that was packed with fans cheering on the Oklahoma Sooners. Spectators reported hearing the blast during the game but no one was hurt in the stadium.
There are reports that the blast was part of a suicide plot. The victim's name has not been released and the cause of the explosion is unknown.

At 4:31 pm I sent the following email to Steve Winogron the news director at CFRA:

Dear Mr. Winogron,

In your coverage of the OU suicide (article by Darren McEwen - http://www.cfra.com/headlines/index.asp?cat=2&nid=32534 ) it is stated that 5 people were injured. I was curious if you knew where information about the injuries originated from, and if you are confident with this report. All other coverage available at this time (mostly through the AP) reports no injuries sustained except the victim of the apparent suicide.

This is just out of curiousity - I am a member of a large online forum and we've been following this closely, brainstorming and speculating on this as one of our members has several children at the school, and was at the stadium when this occurred. This one piece of information regarding injuries sticks out to us at this point as being "odd".

Thank you for your time and assistance in this matter it is greatly appreciated.

Most Sincerely,
XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

At approx. 6:30pm this evening I rechecked the article and the words "and five others are injured" have been removed from the article. I have not received word back from the station (I'm not expecting to and will frankly be shocked if I do).

Thought this was an interesting development. Seeing as this was not an AP article I would tend to think the reporting was more reliable than the MSM stuff we see all over but I am not familiar with the station or the reporter.

The question now is - were there 5 injured - my guess is probably. Why are they failing to report this? My guesses are as follows: A.) They are afraid witnesses could be in danger B.) They don't want ANYONE talking to them - at least not at this point C.) There is a small chance that there was no-one else injured in the first place, but considering a bus driver was knocked off his feet and most likely sustained at least MINOR injuries I would say that "no-one injured" is NOT an accurate statement.

You're welcome Cindy, and thank you for your help finding it as well. If there is a next time - hopefully not - I will remember to get a screen shot of the original article before alerting the management!

I'm going to search around and see if this article was printed elsewhere, but I doubt it.

One of the posts here said the bus driver was taken to the hospital. That would be at least injured, and there was the student reported to have the red face from being so close to the blast. Interesting the article was changed after being released.

I saw the later article that said the bus driver was taken to the hospital, but wondered about its accuracy. The SoonerFan who talked to one of the bus drivers said that the knocked-down bus driver was spending the night with the FBI and local constabulary (police/constables). He said he was unhurt.

If he was sent to a hospital (or otherwise in some type of protective custody until his witness account could be documented), maybe there are others, too, that we con't know about.

My additional thanks to for following up on the "injuries" story.

FWIW, I *think* the reporter, McEwen, is primarily a sports writer. I remember googling his name really quickly the other night when I had the article but couldn't place the KFRA580 talk radio station (in Ottawa, Canada) as his affiliation. Most of the first few hits were sports-related items.

Hmmm, the candlelight vigil idea to explain the matches is a good one, but I'm certain the Daily would've caught wind of that anytime over the weekend, don't you think?

Of course, we don't know when the matches appeared there--whether they were there all along, as when it was reported at 5:30 PM that there was nothing but crime tape on the scene, or if they appeared there between 5:30PM and 7:50PM, when they were noted in print.

The Triangle guys maybe did a brief salute vigil right after sundown? Or just a group of friends or people from the apartments who were evac'ed to hotels? Not sure he had many friends there.

Of course, there is also another possibility ... do ME types burn candles like that? I've seen large incense sticks stuck in the ground for a vigil, and left there afterwards, still burning, but I don't know if a candleligt vigil isn't strictly an American thing.

If that's what happened, they "vigil'ed and ran" - didn't stay long, if the reporter didn't encounter them. Hmmm.

Any luck finding someone to check out the bench and crime scene? I'm anxious to hear if you found out anything.
