And now we have a SC nominee that is an old maid. The only thing that even hints at conservatism is that she claims to be a Republican. Her actions indicate a Democrat man-hating wench. Cronyism at its very worst.
In some ways, it makes sense. He gets the Dems comfortable in thinking they have won, Bush is weak, then WHAM! he busts out with a Luttig or Brown, and their heads are spinning so fast, they don't stop until the confirmation is done.

I think you're probably right with the first 8 words...
I wish that's the case, but that gives this bunch way too much credit. I mean, everybody's been talking here about all the grand schemes and head fakes the president and Rove have been using to throw the media (in particular) and the Dems off base on this, like they're sitting up there playing everyone's marionnette strings and laughing about it. But again, that gives this bunch way too much credit. Bottom line, IMHO, this president does not want any more headaches from judicial nominations, he wants to get this out of the way and use his remaining political capital for the next 1,205 days on other things.
All of those choices--a Luttig or a Jones--appear to have higher intellects than Miers. Roberts and his persuasive abilities may be our only hope for Miers; otherwise, someone like Breyer--who along with Scalia and Roberts are the top intellects but unlike Scalia isn't abrasive--would be able to turn her to the left.
It's obvious from her recent donations that Miers will flip flop if expediency calls for it.

I agree. If it turns out that she served on the Board of a Christian organization, that would be strong evidence that she is herself a Christian.
IF she is a Christian, I wholeheartedly change my expressed doubts. We don't have an evangelical Christian on the Court (and to my knowledge haven't had for at least half a century) and I would turn cartwheels to get one.
Listen, this might be just my initial reaction to all this and maybe I will be okay in a week. But it is hard not to get demoralized by this pick. I know I am saying I am not a defeatist, but am acting like one. That is just how I feel right now.
How do you know if it's a good pick or not? Most of us are still undecided based on the limited facts. Do you have "inside" info or are you simply disappointed that your preferred choice wasn't picked?

There are a great number of organizations that use the terms "Exodus" and "Ministry" or "Ministries" in their name. I still can't unequivocally figure out which one Ms. Meirs was a board member of.
Zell Miller gave Clinton's keynote address at the 1992 Dem Convention.
And Bush's keynote address at the 2004 Convention.
The Dem Party used to accomodate southern conservatives. They are no longer so accomodating - and Miers left. IMO that is what happened here.
So, by your standards, should we reject anything that Zell Miller says, just because he once supported Clinton as a Dem?

I don't know whether it's a "bad" pick, I'm willing to give her the benefit of the doubt. What I've been trying to say is, was this the "best" pick the president could make? Totally different questions there. And IMHO, the answer to the second question is "no."
Yes she was. She was a Judge on the distinguished D.C. Court of Appeals.

No, but I'm not sure we should nominate him to the Supreme Court either. Not when other highly qualified, longtime conservatives are available.
By my standards, this person is the LAST person to nominate to the SCOTUS, dirtboy.
