Perhaps the strategy is to get the base riled up, calling their Congress critters to oppose this nominee. Perhaps they want to see if the base is sleeping?

At this point, I'm just disgusted that the Pres is "skeered" of the Dems. Who CARES if they don't like Scalia/Thomas types! Who friggin cares!?!? We have the majority!

It's why we have elections. Each election we go out and open a can of whoop arse on the demoncrats. We have the Presidency, the Senate and the House. This is the best the party can do? They would be setting a precedent however, if they didn't screw us, so I imagine that went into their thinking.
