A Voice For Those Who Cannot Speak (Miers' Pastor Speaks Against Abortion!!)
Lookoutmag.com ^ | Barry McCarty

"...Killing unborn children, sick people, or those with disabilities used to be considered monstrous crimes. We have already made a mockery of the Hippocratic Oath’s prohibition of abortion, and euthanasia is becoming “progressive care” for those whose continued existence is an inconvenience.God’s Word not only teaches us to treasure every human, but also to protect the weakest among us. Yet sadly, over 4,000 abortions are performed every day in America. That makes it the most common invasive surgical procedure."

THIS IS ONLY AN EXCERPT, BUT APPEARS TO BE AN ARTICLE BY HARRIET MIERS' PASTOR AT VALLEY VIEW CHRISTIAN CHURCH...VERY PRO-LIFE.

I am beginning to feel better about this choice. Of course a pastor cannot speak for everyone in his congregation, but if Harriet is as involved in her church as reported, she will be a good choice.

ACLJ Calls Harriet Miers - President Bush's Nominee to Replace Justice O'Connor - an "Excellent" Choice for the Supreme Court

October 3, 2005

(Washington, DC) – The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), specializing in constitutional law said today that Harriet Miers, the nominee named by President Bush for a seat on the Supreme Court of the United States, is an excellent choice who represents the conservative mainstream of judicial philosophy of interpreting the Constitution, not re-writing it.

“Once again, President Bush showed exceptional judgment in naming Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court to replace Justice O’Connor,” said Jay Sekulow, Chief Counsel of the ACLJ, who argues regularly before the high court and has a pro-life protest case at the high court this term. “At a time when the high court is facing some of the most critical issues of the day – including a number of cases dealing directly with abortion and life issues – the person who replaces Justice O’Connor is critical. Harriet Miers is an excellent choice with an extraordinary record of service in the legal community and is certain to approach her work on the high court with a firm commitment to follow the Constitution and the rule of law. I have been privileged to work with her in her capacity as White House counsel. She is bright, thoughtful, and a consummate professional and I enthusiastically endorse her nomination.”

Sekulow added: “We look forward to a speedy confirmation process and will work aggressively to ensure that Harriet Miers gets full and fair consideration before the Senate. We call on members of the Senate to reject the partisan political rhetoric and focus on the judicial philosophy of this conservative mainstream nominee.”

Sekulow said the ACLJ will begin mobilizing a national campaign to ensure that Miers is confirmed. Sekulow said he will generate support for the nominee through his daily radio broadcast that reaches 1.5 million listeners, through his weekly television show, by using direct mail, phone calls, and emails to a list approaching one million supporters.

“We know the intentions of the liberal left – to do anything possible to derail this nominee,” said Sekulow. “We are prepared to meet those challenges head on and ensure that this battle ends with the confirmation of Harriet Miers as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court.”

Led by Chief Counsel Jay Sekulow, the American Center for Law and Justice is based in Washington, D.C.

What do we know about her personally? Was she ever married? I heard her referred to as "Miss." - any family we know of, what is her favorite sport?

"Pass this thread info along to other threads...it may placate some anger around here."

Are people that easily tricked? Sad.

But if the rumor on the rumor that Miers is pro-life gains traction, a Bush wife will need to come out and hint Miers isn't so. SOP.

Why would a closet Souter attend a church that no liberal would be caught dead in?

I think I will give President Bush the benefit of the doubt.

MISUNDERESTIMATED can apply to conservatives who doubt Bush as well.

I agree that conservatives are jumping on Bush a little too much here. Esp about her political donations. Gosh The Gov of Texas Rick Perry was a Dem and one of Gore's statechairmen in 1988. Back then Gore was viewed as a conservative voice in the the Dem party. A time when people such as I were conservative democrats.

I keep seeing this brought up. What does it matter if she was ever married? I want a Justice that will rule by the Constitution and not create extra-Constitutional powers, conservatively or liberally. Unfortunately many here want a Justice that will create such powers, as long as it's conservative based

Abortion is not about saving women’s lives!

Total Abortions since 1973

45,951,133

------------------------------------------------------------

Why the drop after 1960? (in deaths of women from illegal abortions)

The reasons were new and better antibiotics, better surgery and the establishment of intensive care units in hospitals. This was in the face of a rising population. Between 1967 and 1970 sixteen states legalized abortion. In most it was limited, only for rape, incest and severe fetal handicap (life of mother was legal in all states). There were two big exceptions — California in 1967, and New York in 1970 allowed abortion on demand. Now look at the chart carefully.

----------------------------------------------------------------------

Abortion Statistics - Decision to Have an Abortion (U.S.)

· 25.5% of women deciding to have an abortion want to postpone childbearing

· 21.3% of women cannot afford a baby

· 14.1% of women have a relationship issue or their partner does not want a child

· 12.2% of women are too young (their parents or others object to the pregnancy)

· 10.8% of women feel a child will disrupt their education or career

· 7.9% of women want no (more) children

· 3.3% of women have an abortion due to a risk to fetal health

2.8% of women have an abortion due to a risk to maternal health

----------------------------------------------------------------------

So how many women’s lives have been saved by abortion?

Only about 3% of abortions since 1972 were reported to be “due to a risk to maternal health.” A reasonable person would recognize that not all of those cases represent a lethal risk. But let’s say they did. That means that nearly 45 million fetuses were butchered to save the lives of about 1.3 million women. Or put another way; 35 babies are killed to save each woman.

Abortion was legal in all 50 states prior to Roe v. Wade in cases of danger to the life of the woman.

Amen to that. I really do not understand why more people here don't have a more coherent political and judicial philosophy. I mean many were yelling give up and down votes ,its the Pres pick, Elections matter, etc when the Dems were threatning to filibuster but many now are yelling to have their Senator oppose her since she is not the President of National Right to Life.

They will no doubt try to discriminate against her based on religion. Either Miers or a pubbie on the committee needs to ask Kennedy and Schumer if the "due process" clause of the 5th Amendment applies to them when it comes to Federal employment.

Good point. She has been there 25 years, while no liberal could stand it there for 25 minutes.

According to what I've a post going around:

Hecht (Nathan Hecht, TX Supreme Court Justice and frequesnt companion of Miers) says Miers never got married because she "probably worked too hard. She's close to her family, has a sister and three brothers, goes to her nephews' high school football games, bought a car for one of them." She "had a Catholic upbringing, had not been close to the church, it was off again, on again, then she came to a point in her life when she wanted to change that…. She made an abrupt change in 79 or 80. She was very hard-working and successful, she wanted new meaning, substance in her life.” Her father died when she was a freshman in college. "Look at her commitment in taking care of her [now 93-year-old mother] all these years. Look at her tax returns. She tithes, gave a full tithe to the church. Helps out in missions, Bible translation. These are the kinds of values she shows." Hecht and Miers "went to two or three prolife dinners in the late 80s or early 90s."
