Catholic Church no longer swears by truth of the Bible
Times (UK) ^ | October 05, 2005 | Ruth Gledhill

THE hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church has published a teaching document instructing the faithful that some parts of the Bible are not actually true. The Catholic bishops of England, Wales and Scotland are warning their five million worshippers, as well as any others drawn to the study of scripture, that they should not expect “total accuracy” from the Bible.

You can't take words written by a man regarding a certain event and use them to slander him without acknowledging the context of his words.

I think I just saw Bill Bennett give you a cyber high five.

I have read that some attribute Job to him.

It is quite an argument among rabbinical scholars. (Don't get too close when they start!)

Thank you for clarifying some of the theology...

I am not surprised.
Get into any discussion of RCC doctrine and when cornered by the truth of the scripture Catholics will tell you that the bible is not the sole source of inspiration, even if the extrabiblical sources contradict the bible itself.

There are many very fundamentalist churches who don't believe in transubstantiation, a belief one would have to hold if one supported a literal translation of the bible.

Not necessarily. It is quite possible to believe in the real presence of Christ in the elements of the Eucharist without believing in the explanation of transubstantiation.

Christians believed in the real presence for hundreds of years before the doctrine of transubstantiation was developed. Orthodox Christians still believe in the real presence without accepting transubstantiation.

Another good example. I'm going to try to copy the link here. I'm not sure how to move it so if it doesn't go through then you can go to the thread and see post #121.

Martin Luther and the Jews. It is in post #121 on http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-religion/1493775/posts. Any help cleaning the link up would be appreciated.

This article twists what the Church teaches. It is not change that the Church does not hold that the Bible is not to be used as a science text or as a full and sole historical text. The Church has always held that the Bible is the infallible, inerrant word of God. It acknowledges that such truth may not always be a literal truth but can be allegorical or symbolic. A good example is the Book of Revealation. There is no doubt that the Book is true but is that truth expressed literally ( are we going to see horses with heads of locusts) or is it allegorical. ( We see great weapons of destruction). Please do not use this woman's article- consider the source- to conclude the Church does not teach the Bible is without error in matters of faith and morals.
PS. The Church believes in the Virgin Birth, the Bodily Resurrection of Christ and other doctines which are held in contempt by so many liberal denominations.

"This is a red herring, but it is a very old one."

It is that. I know Catholics who left the church claiming that they were never taught about the bible. I don't buy it. In Catholic schools there's no way you can NOT learn about the bible. You are in fact literally indoctrinated. All day long it's pray, sing, hear bible stories, catechism, pray more, go to mass. I had religion class one hour a day, five days a week for 10 years (till junior year when I transferred to public school) I knew all about the bible...and I never actually read it myself. It was read to me! There was no escape from it!!! :O>

Ok. If the Bible is literally true from cover to cover. Please explain how God was tired after the sixth day.
Not all truth is literal.

"We are long past the days of believing that the world was created in six 24-hour days."

You can't demonstrate that that principle comes from the text itself. Actually, we are long past the days of people actually reading what the text ACTUALLY says.

I would simply say, practically, all believers in Yeshua are to imitate Him - and He was completely faithful and obedient to the Torah of Moses.

I tend to view the literature in that sense. I also view the Bible as a completely Zionist doctrine... Zionism is indeed something I approve of.

The entire foundation of Western Civilization is Mosaic Law, something both the pagan Islamic thugs and neo-pagan new age leftists cannot abide and wish to destroy. Malakhim Raoth.

I wonder how many Christians will deny the Ten Commandments...

The bishops of England, Scotland, and Wales are not the Catholic Church. They are a bishops conference and as such have no per se authority. Secondly the actual document of the said bishops'conference should be read. Official Catholic teaching on Scripture is definitive and is stated as follows:

"...(W)e must acknowledge that the books of Scripture firmly, faithfully, and without error, teach that truth which God for the sake of our salvationk wished to see confided in the Sacred Scriptures. See #12 Constitution on Divine Revelation, Second Vatican Council.

You are confusing believing in God and the Bible with idolizing a book and interpreting everything in it literally without thinking.

I am an atheist.

Also note: There is no such thing as an ecumenical atheist or an othodox atheist.

Back at ya, good buddy....

Ok. If the Bible is literally true from cover to cover. Please explain how God was tired after the sixth day. Not all truth is literal.

Especially if you don't read it correctly. It said ‘God rested,’ it didn't say anything about being tired...

Myself, on a mild sunny afternoon, I like to rest on a shady riverbank with a line in the water, and not because I am tired.

"And do you believe what the Times prints about your church?"

Hey, I just thought this was newsworthy. I am not endorsing anything here.

"Is this really any worse than Protestants who claim the King James Bible is the only true Bible?"

I don't know. I've never heard of any Protestants that say that, though (not that I don't doubt there are some).

I doubt they would be from a major denomination.

I am an atheist.

So then you have proof that God does not exist? You're not claiming to be omniscient, are you?

I wonder how many (liberal) Jews will deny the Ten Commandments and follow the golden calf.
