THE hierarchy of the Roman Catholic Church has published a teaching document instructing the faithful that some parts of the Bible are not actually true. The Catholic bishops of England, Wales and Scotland are warning their five million worshippers, as well as any others drawn to the study of scripture, that they should not expect total accuracy from the Bible.

But they happen to represent the larger teaching of the Catholic Church.
Ever heard of the Vatican? The curia? You know not of what you speak.
Rather thyan being "excerpted", almost the entire Mass (the Traditional Latin Mass) comes from the Bible. Any Catholic with a quality missal knew this, as most had explanatory notes in the margins. There were also catechistic materials, such as "You and Your Mass", which were widely used and available, that set out in great detail the origins of the biblical references in the Mass. Further, every Catholic family I knew (or know) had a Bible in the home, a proper Douay-Rheims Bible. Catholics, properly and traditionally taught, were exposed to more Bible passages than the most ardent proddy. Of course, with the imposition of the "spirit of Vatican II", such comprehensive teachings went by the wayside in favor of guitar "masses" and feelgood bible bites.
I don't know what diocese you grew up in, but I pity you.
There can be no image made of a thing that is infinite.
First, define what exist means.
I thought most Protestants used the NIV, not King James.
I'd put my knowledge of the workings of the magisterium up against yours any day of the week.
The outline of the Mass originates from the Didache, not the Bible.
There was one fellow ( a new guy ) who had a lot to say about Catholics recently. Hes banned now. You should have seen this guys posts! Holy Tomatoes!
You mean you were not given a big ole black adult version of the bible? And why should you be? No kid is going to read it. You were given age appropriate versions. So they never taught you about Noah's ark, the coat of many colors, the parting of the Red Sea? They had to have taught you these stories. You were probably steeped in the bible! But like a fish does not realise that he is in water..you did not realise that most, if not all that you learned came from the bible.
Anyway do seven year olds normally read an adult edition of the bible? Do 10 year olds read the bible? At 11 years old do you think you could have made much sense out of Paul's letters to the Romans? No of course not. And that is why it was read to you and taught to you in workbooks and songs and at mass.
Catechism..tons of bible stuff in it such as the ten Commandments for example. Did you learn about the 10 Commandments in a vaccum? Surely you learned where they came from. A story right out of the bible.
You are right to point out that Churches have totally failed in teaching anything about the Bible, it's history, church history, various doctrines & teachings that came and went that were all supposedly 'Bible based'.
They leave their congregants unschooled, ignorant and vulnerable.
Sorry bud. Your diversion tactic ain't going to save you here. So, you're an atheist. Thats what you've stated. So defend yourself. What proof do you have that convinces you that God does not exist.
I will certainly defer to an internet deacon in such matters.
The New Testament didn't exist then.
My apologies. You are right it should have said rested. I still do not think that God would have needed a rest. Not in the sense we need to rest after our labours.
By the way is your name Sir Francis Dashwood from the founder of the Hellfire Club of the 18th century. Or am I quite mistaken in that?
By the way I have no doubt that God made this world.
Define the term exist.
There can be no image of made of something infinite.
What are you saying? That Jesus only seemed to suffer and die? Then you're a docetist. That God the Son just used a human body, thus denying that He became a true Man? Then you're an Apollinarian.
Well at least nobody wanted to kill him for it.
You think he was bad, read Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan. The Presbyterians really hated him for Behemoth ...
Acknowledging that every literary & poetic device used by Shakespeare is also used in both the Old & New Testaments is no threat to God Almighty.
Hyperbole, irony, metaphor, etc...
The hyperbole is not literal, yet the spiritual truths illumined by the hyperbole are true.
The metaphors are not literally true, but the spiritual truths illustrated by the metaphors are true.
And sometimes the irony written into a Biblical narrative was not actually, literally experienced by the persons spoken of in the text, but still the spiritual truths brought into focus by the story are true.
I know that is disturbing to recognize at first, but it is so.
I'm a bit confused. Are you trying to say that when you have a discrepancy between two statements it's possible that they are still both true?
So by not knowing Hebrew (or Greek, isn't that the other one that's always thrown around?) I am not qualified to interpret the Bible. I guess you made my point for me. That's what the Church Fathers and scholars are for. To interpret and help us understand the scriptures. I'd venture to say that most folks who believe that every single word in their KJV is to be taken literally also have no understanding of Hebrew or Greek.
