This press release is embargoed until 2230 hours on Thursday 6 October. Before that time it is only available through the link which you have been sent.

President George W. Bush told Palestinian ministers that God had told him to invade Afghanistan and Iraq - and create a Palestinian State, a new BBC series reveals.

In Elusive Peace: Israel and the Arabs, a major three-part series on BBC TWO (at 9.00pm on Monday 10, Monday 17 and Monday 24 October), Abu Mazen, Palestinian Prime Minister, and Nabil Shaath, his Foreign Minister, describe their first meeting with President Bush in June 2003.

Nabil Shaath says: "President Bush said to all of us: 'I'm driven with a mission from God. God would tell me, "George, go and fight those terrorists in Afghanistan." And I did, and then God would tell me, "George, go and end the tyranny in Iraq …" And I did. And now, again, I feel God's words coming to me, "Go get the Palestinians their state and get the Israelis their security, and get peace in the Middle East." And by God I'm gonna do it.'"

As I prompt for third party cookies, it was interesting that a Russian company came up on the cookie permission request from the BBC site. .ru?

It's like when Pat Robertson said Bush had said there would be no casualties in Iraq. He later retracted the statement, though.

I don't believe Bush would say this. He's more politically astute than that.

Really?? I don't think so...

I don't believe it either. People want to make him out to having a 'holy war' as if he is some maniacal religious fanatic. In other words, placing him on the same level as the terrorists. Seems to be a favorite tactic with those such as Loony Sheehan and others of her ilk. BBC included.

"I agree. But the sad thing is people will believe this because they want to believe this, whether they have proof or not."

Which is precisely why they made it up in the first place.

I'm serious, two Brit papers also "reported" that lie.

NR linked to all those "reports", and the BBC commentary, one reporter from NR was asked to comment by the BBC.

This was during that first week of hysteria.

He may have said something like this, but his rationale for invading Iraq is much bigger and more complex than his sense of what God wants him to do. This is typical cheap atack journalism: the BBC does not have an exact quote on film and then they're taking someone's recollection of what he said out of context and leaving out everything else Bush said about Iraq. When Bush is talking to ministers he probably talks more about his spiritual sense for the war in Iraq rather than talking about the political angle and the threat from WMD.

That's incredible. People at the BBC have completely lost their minds! I always thought the Brits were more cool, calculating, and rational than that.

If this is the meeting I'm thinking about, everyone on the Palestinian side came out very impressed with Bush's committment to a Palestinian state. At the time, it was mentioned that Bush had appealed to them religiously.

I would not be surprised if that quote is mostly accurate.

If Bush said that, which I don't believe he did, but if he did then I believe he is using God for political purposes and is not genuine. That is a very scary proposition.

Nabil Shaath says: "President Bush said to all of us: 'I'm driven with a mission from God'"

Gotta do better than that Nabil. Everyone in the US has seen the Blues Brothers.

Jake: First you trade the Cadillac for a microphone. Then you lie to me about the band. Now you're gonna put me right back in the joint.
Elwood: They're not gonna catch us. We're on a mission from God.

Another one for Nabil.

Reverend Cleophus James: Praise God.
Elwood: And God bless the United States of America.
