DRUDGE REPORTING TONIGHT:

GOP AIDES JOIN RESISTANCE OVER MIERS NOMINATION
Tue Oct 11 2005 20:52:44 ET

As the White House seeks to rally senators behind the Supreme Court nomination of Harriet E. Miers, lawyers for the Republican senators on the Judiciary Committee are expressing dissatisfaction with the choice and pushing back against her, aides to six of the 10 Republican committee members tell Wednesday's NEW YORK TIMES.

"Everybody is hoping that something will happen on Miers, either that the president would withdraw her or she would realize she is not up to it and pull out while she has some dignity intact," a lawyer to a Republican committee member said.

Developing...

I just cannot understand why Bush followed up the unknown Roberts with a FOB (Friend of Bush) crony named Harried Miers? What ever was he thinking. Geez!

I felt of wave of nausea seeping up from the pit of my stomach when I first came across them.

No matter the cost to family and friends?

OF course not. That's my one caveat.

Well, if that's true (and I don't believe a single word printed in the Washington Compost) then I guess they'll have to start a new list.

"Heck, nominate someone like Mark Levin who would love to take on Senators in such a hearing."

Pay per view, battle of the titans, to the death. My money is on Mark.

Mark would be a great pick too.

Well, I'm talking about the RINOs in the US Senate. There are NO RINOs on FR. We're all battle-hardened, right-wing wacko conservatives!!

Bump to that!

We do some pretty good work and have fun doing it too. I know that I like and admire all of the 100-150 or so FReepers I've personally met, including YOU. :)

That was one great and fun trip we made to RWR's Library.

The next confirmation battle. I get the impression that the current one is not over yet. Do you?

THis capitulation without a fight to a 60 vote supermajority is probably a big part of the cause of this "whatever." And it is going unchallenged.

Agreed -- but it can only be fixed in the Senate, per the Constitution. Each House sets its own rules.

Frankly, the 60-vote supermajority is so outrageous that it would justify the President vetoing every appoipriations bill until there were up-or-down votes on nominees -- including Bolton. Unfortunately, the President might lose doing that as well.

Easy to say. But what do you do with a divided caucus?

You nominate a person without regard to whether that person will draw an unconstitutional filibuster, and without regard to whether your majority is only 55 instead of 60.

Our nation's system of justice is left up to quotas imposed according to race, sex, and religion.

Quota ???

You have a problem with a women being on the bench?

The Republican party is split between pathetic liberal squishes taking potshots at the President for their own political gain, and stiff-necked wingnuts who would rather wallow in ideologically pure defeat than sack up and play the game of politics intelligently.

Deserves to be repeated.

No. The nerve was hit when the nomination of Miers was announced.

Forget the WashPo. Bush has made it clear that he ONLY considered women for this slot. Laura helped make up his mind on that point and Harry Reid sealed the deal by suggesting Miers.

I would guess that he queried five women and only Janice Rogers-Brown said, "Send me!" She's that feisty and will NOT back down.

But he has since cooled to Rogers-Brown because, among other tings, Reid served notice that a Rogers-Brown nomination would be a declaration of total war, the Democrats would shut down the Senate if necessary to derail her nomination.

I firmly believe that the ensuing battle would have resulted in far more hurt on the Democrats' cause going into next year's elections. I know that Bush's base would have been FIRED UP in a way that they are not with respect to Miers' nomination.

When I think of crony, I tend to think about Harry Truman's or Warren Harding's poke-playing buddies, not Harriet Miers. Tom Clark also comes to mind.

It's become so nasty, so partison, that no one wants to submit themselves to the nightmare

Don't know how much was humor, since I only read part of the transcript, but during his interview yesterday, Scalia said he wasn't sure he would be willing to go through the confirmation process again.
