It bounced off the lip of the glove and sounde dlike a trapped catch to the ump.

It bounced off the lip of the glove and sounded like a trapped catch to the ump. That could very well be what happened.
An experienced catcher would have reached out and tagged the batter just to be sure. Especially with a pitcher on the mound like Kelvim Escobar with a nasty split-finger fastball who had been getting White Sox hitters to chase pitches in the dirt for two innings.
