I said that here on FR the day after that infamous play. I don't know how anyone can look at those photos and say with any certainty that the ball did not hit the ground.

Since a highspeed shutter cam did not record it, I'd say there is a 95% it did not hit the ground.
Obviously the ump could not see the ball, it sounded like a trapped ball to him - he made the right call. {except that pump-the-fist thingy}

Whatever the photos show, all Paul had to do was tag Pierzynski and there would have been no debate. All he had to do was finish the play.
That said, if this series does nothing other than focus attention on the pathetic state of major league umpiring, it will all have been worth it.
