Chinese police are investigating a report of attempted baby trafficking on an internet auction site, according to a state-owned newspaper.

The advertisement was reportedly placed on eBay's Chinese website, Eachnet.

Boys were advertised for 28,000 yuan ($3,450) while girls were offered for 13,000 yuan ($1,603), Eachnet manager Tang Lei told the China Daily.

I know a couple of families who have adopted Chinese girls. They had to jump through quite a few hoops, and spent a lot of money to do it - much of which, I'm sure, ended up in the pocket of the Chinese government. Their adoption process seems to be a money-making machine for their government. IMO the Chinese government is selling kids and calling it "adoption services".

You can't look up "democracy" on the Chinese internet, but can buy human beings. Sick, sick, sick.

You are so right. The Government is perfectly fine with selling babies.....they are not perfectly fine with the comrades selling babies.

The Chinese government has no place in criticizing what anyone does, after so many years of inhumane laws restricting something so natural and so human as parenting children!!!

I have adopted a child from China. I do take offense that you thing that I am "buying" a child.

Although not inexpensive, the majority of the adoption costs are in meeting the requirements of the states (homestudy costs), document preparation, travel expenses, and U.S. adoption agency fee. The adoption fee and orphanage donation that are paid to the Chinese government are relative minor. It is my understanding that by Chinese law, the orphanage donation must be used for the care of remaining orphans. This is apparently true considering the improvement of the orphanages over the past decade.

This is true. The harder part of adoption is what you need to do to meet the standards set by the state you live in. China (or wherever) isn't nearly close to being the source of the greatest expense.

I don't know about anyone else but I sure wouldn't want to have to learn Chinese just to talk to my own kid...

Sorry, no offense intended. You probably know more about it than I do. All I know about it is what my friends who have gone through the process have told me. I don't think you are in the wrong in adopting a child from China. My wife and I have talked a little about it ourselves. In fact I don't have a problem with a person "buying" a child off that website - if only to save a child's life. It's better than them being "sold" to someone who plans to use them for their own perverted purposes. The whole idea of selling a child is extremely immoral, but I'd rather have a them come into a good family than the alternative.

Thank you. The Chinese do have some severe social problems that they have to deal with. Readers of the article will note that if this ad is not a hoax, it could end up with a death penalty (bullet in back of the head while kneeling) for the person attempting to sell the child. They have executed child and bride traffickers before.

IMPO, aren't there plenty of kids in this country worthy of being adopted? I have never understood why people adopt from foreign countries. Is it some kind of "feel good mentality"?

Every child in every country is worthy of having a family. The reality of the situation is most children in the US that need families have fairly significant needs. Most are older, have several siblings, and often have very challenging medical, behavioral and social issues. There are also significant racial issues. Many governmental social workers are reluctant to place black children in white homes, or even white neighborhoods.

Most people looking to adopt are just looking to have a family, not cure the world's ills.

I think some of it is the “feels good” thing. A lot of what drives it is the easy open and shut process. In the States it can take a few years and cost lots of $. You also have age limits of the adopting parents to deal with. There have also been a number of situations where the biological family went back to court and regained custody. “Kidnapping by the court” is what I call it. In a foreign adoption done is done. Fast, cheep, and finished even if you are a bit old.
