> My yes, what a patriot she now is... a few minutes ago she was a witch, a bumbling lackey, a toady.

Wow, such venom. I never said she was any of those things. I always brought evidence to bear about her conservative credentials (or lack of), and evidence that she didn't have constitutional scholarship to really perform on SCOTUS. If anything, I did volunteer that she was probably fine as a lawyer. But just being qualified to be a lawyer is not enough for SCOTUS. There is a higher bar, and she didn't meet it. She seemed a nice enough person-- but that has nothing to do with qualifications.

I'm sorry you are so emotionally invested in Ms. Miers. Take a deep breath.

I was called a three-toed tree sloth a few weeks back by a Miers supporter.

It couldn't be your "handle", now, could it ... ? Hmmm?

Well, as an evangelical, I feel angry and upset. Harriet Miers is a good woman who was slandered for political reasons. I saw posts that called her "a waste of human life" here.

Fine. The President nominates another candidate for justice; there's a big fight in Congress; both the Left and the Right are energized; hip hip hooray for our side!

What about Mrs. Miers?

If it were me, I'd be walking out the door into private life and never talking to the press or another politician again.

She deserves some apology and I believe some concrete compensation in terms of an award or another post suited to her, because, frankly, words are cheap in Washington. But words are also daggers that cannot be withdrawn.

I totally agree with your statement. I just finished listening to Rush trying to convince himself the democrats are now running scared. I agree with Rush 90% of the time but this last assessment is just plain wrong.

Miers should have had her day before the judicial committee. That is where her nomination should have ended if it was to be ended.

With Miers withdrawing, the left has been given hope, talking points, and a renewed attack on the religious right. After the 2004 election democrats were hinting by their actions the strategy for 2006 and 2008. They feel, and rightly so, that they did not make the case that the Republican Party was controlled by the religious right. The word "evangelicals" to describe religious Conservatives started almost immediately after the election. The democrats know that the word "evangelical" is not always seen in a favorable light. Now they democrats have been given a gift thanks to the Buchananites, Coulters, Ingrahams, Limbaughs,Wills, and Hannitys. All but Buchanan I respected much until recently. Now they have lost some credibility in my eyes. They got what they wanted and in turn hurt the Republican Party in doing so.

Add to this mess the McCain gang in the senate and this is a disaster.

The best chance to get what they wanted in a Supreme Court nominee may have been killed by the very people who wanted it most.

Bush pushed a judicial Trojan Horse to the gates of the Supreme court, and anti-Miers gang screamed that there was person inside.

Yes, the constitutional process has been usurped. However, the president can still use the recess appointment for non-lifetime appointments.

He can affect some change.

I would amend the constitution to get rid of lifetime appointment of judges.

"Well, they don't have the same vitriol to deal with. The question is, what happens if we lose?"

IF? We would have DEFINITELY lost had Miers been confirmed!

What happened to Meirs by many people was not a disagreement ... it was a borking

Those people have done exactly what they hate the left for

and now the left will throw it in all our faces

As I have said before .. they handled this poorly

I only hope the person who gets confirmed is strongly supported by those who opposed Miers, and that this person will support R.v.W. It would be the ultimate irony.

So you would be FOR the continued deaths of the most innocent among us, to prove a political point?

"What happened to Meirs by many people was not a disagreement ... it was a borking"

No, there was evidence that she was pro affirmative action and abortion.

I'm glad Bork wasn't approved either - he didn't recognize the 2nd amendment as protecting individual rights to gun ownership.

For some of us, it will take a while to heal the "cleaning lady", "paper stapler" wounds. And I wasn't even a Miers supporter! Frum, Coulter, and their fans here at FR stained the entire side. And although everybody is now swearing that THEY didn't say any horrible things, there were very few who disavowed them.

How about the 45% of FReepers who opposed her nomination, and the 15% who needed more info... vs the 30% dead-enders who supported this affirmative action, pro-abortion nominee?

Those figures were reversed until Miers was trashed by the anti-Miers crowd.

The entire list of those willing to help McCain totaled 11. He only needed to use 7 of them.

You would not get 78 votes on someone to the right of Roberts. You would lose all democrats, so the most you could get would be 55.

But a filibuster can be sustained with only 41 votes, so there you go......no confirmation of those to the right of Roberts.

I smell coffee......

"Bush pushed a judicial Trojan Horse to the gates of the Supreme court, and anti-Miers gang screamed that there was person inside."

No, we screamed that there was an unacceptable pro affirmative action and pro abortion nominee inside after Bush drug her into the Conservative camp, saying "trust me."

I read this from a group of JRB haters, but it got me fired up. We could use 9 of her on the court.

I read the quotes, and they are GREAT. I'd love to see her nominated. I want to watch the Dems try to create a case against a highly experienced, extremely well-qualified black woman, recently confirmed to a federal court by the Senate, including many Democrats.

Hear! Hear!

I was remaining neutral on Miers personally because I wanted to get more facts before I made a decision, but the offensive comments here were disgusting.

And VictoryGal, as a Christian we are supposed to be emotionally invested in those who are being abused and persecuted. Don't mock that quality in those of us who were offended by the disgusting treatment Miers received.

LOL, yeeaah, the court, sure, that's what I meant :P

Fred Thompson....that would be AWESOME! Heh, heh, heh....maybe I need to start a grass roots movement; I'd have to meet with Fred, I mean the former Senator from Tennessee first, of course, but would need captains to help guide him to his rightful seat on the court. Can I put you down, Tree of Liberty?

Are you listening to Sean Hannity talking about the Meirs withdrawal and rallying the troops...he woke me from my doctor-prescribed afternoon nap! Go, Sean, Go!!!!!

Now Sean's laughing at Reid and (hic) Kennedy. Awesome way to wake up!

People were mocking that being a Christian was, in itself,THE characteristic about Miers which most qualified her for the Supreme Court.

OhioW....

There is enough dissapointment to go around. We'll not wallow in it.

As an American first, preserving the constitution ought not be a partisan issue. It starts there for me.
