I've been waiting almost a month to say....

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED.

You lose, 'Bots. The conservatives win. And though you may not believe it right now, the Miers withdrawal benefits ALL of us. It benefits the Bush administration, which has a chance to start fresh with a serious SCOTUS nominee that we can all respect and get behind. It benefits the Republicans in the Senate, who will no longer be forced to cast no-win votes on this nominee. And it benefits the Supreme Court itself, which may yet be saved.

The only people who have lost today are the Democrats. Miers getting to the Senate floor was a win/win for them: Confirm her and put her on the Court and Bush loses a huge bloc of conservatives for good, in such numbers that Congress could easily be turned over to the impeachment-hungry Dems. Reject her, and Bush has been handed a big and damaging defeat. In withdrawing, Harriet Miers has deprived the Left of EITHER option, and given her boss a chance to start clean and get it right. And in so doing, she has performed the best service she could for the American people.
