A Separate Peace. America is in trouble--and our elites are merely resigned.

Here's an ugly scenario.

The Marxists, Transnationalists and the MSM, sensing they stand on a knife edge between total victroy and total failure strike hard and desperately. They manage to weaken the Bush Administration by continued scandal.(manufactured as it may be)
Maybe mount an impeachment, on whatever grounds. Bush nominates a weak Rino to the court who is confirmed, ending any support he had from the right. We now have a guaranteed twenty years of Bolshevism in the SCOTUS.

The elelction of 08 turns into a three way match, either because the pubs nominate a weak Rino (McManiac) or an arch conservative(Tancredo). Either case forces a third party run. The result, the worst of the three is elected by a sliver of the vote. Toss in a little fraud, just for fun.

The next president, whoever it is,(it won't be a patriot) begins the final phase of the North American Community.

Canadians, particularly in the west, see it as conquest, the Mexicans see it as liberation.

Strikes, riots and unrest break out in Canada. In Mexico, forty to sixty percent decide to storm the frontier rather than wait for the American middle class to be sheared bald enough to pay for all the new promised goodies.

They invade the southwest en masse.
Locals begin to resist, the government sides with the invaders.

Certain political leaders get what they deserve, and the SHTF.

Martial war is declared, the Constitution, or what few tatttered shreds are left of it, is suspended, gun siezures begin. Many citizens turn them in, many don't. Those who do are soon sorry, those who don't are soon hunted.Paranoia rules.

The nation is divided into military regions in order to regain control.

This only makes things worse. Services are overwhelmed by the mobs of invaders and the resulting disruption of the economy.

About then, our endlessly patient, long suffering Jihadis make their big move. Perhaps they take out the Capitol bldg during the State of the Community address.

TEOTWAWKI

Not that big a stretch. Only a few key blunders could take us there.

A few extra blunders of the right sort could make it much worse.

Anyway, it's all in fun.

Intrestingly, I actually agree that there is a sense of 'something' bad about to happen.

I too sense "something in the air". I've never experienced so many conversations ending with unfinished sentences as if is best to leave things unsaid or ending with a peculiar knowing look to imply "you know what I mean and it best be left unsaid"
In some areas/instances "it" permeates the air and is so thick I could cut it with a knife. Very eerie.

Stir in a little bird flu and an economic recession/depression and see what happens.

Naturally, both will be blamed 100% on Bush and Republican policies.

It would sicken me to die from a bird flu.

The weird thing is that there isn't a single concessus as to what that bad thing is. Maybe you guys can take a crack at it. Suggest your own tinfoil hat doomsday theory that will bring America in for hard times.

I think we've seen how thin the veneer of civilization is - and we're terrified. Events can spin out of control quickly and we'll be helpless. Some examples: a nuke attack - race rioting and cops walking off the job - dirty bombs and no means to decontaminate, but rough means to keep people from leaving an area.

And last, a feeling that the good people, the thoughtful people, have left. And in their places are people who want to feel important. But not to be important in our lives in a way that matters. That when we must turn to these people for protection, they'll have a look of horror on their faces... Reminds me of the story of the young policeman, in a bad spot for the first time, who turns to his partner and says, "Oh, my God, let's call the police". Then realizes he's on his own...

Just let the power grid go down in a large region (several adjoining states) of the USA for a month and watch what happens.

Yeah, and no ATMs or gas pumps working, no credit cards accepted, no grocery store restocking etc.
