On a day when DFL gubernatorial candidate Mike Hatch locked up his third quick labor endorsement, an uncharacteristically downbeat Republican Gov. Tim Pawlenty acknowledged that his party is "on the ropes" nationally and that he would consider himself "lucky to get reelected."
In a frank and wide-ranging interview with Minnesota Public Radio on Thursday morning, Pawlenty denied that he has any national political ambitions and downplayed the notion that Minnesota had trended Republican.

Pawlenty, like Norm Coleman, was a beneficiary of the Democrats' implosion following the death of Paul Wellstone.
Pawlenty's numbers have stabilized a great deal from the disastrous legislative special session earlier this year.
He will be able to raise a respectable amount of money for his re-election bid and commands the respect of most rank and file GOP'ers.
Anyone have any opinions, comments, etc. on this article?
I find it hard to believe that any politician would speak this negatively about his campaign or party.

Why talk to MN Public Radio in the first place ?
Beats me. I guess if it's on tape, then he said it. I just don't know why anyone would speak in such a defeatist manner, most of all, a politician.
Voters tend to like divided govt and right now Republicans are generally in control, nationally and to some degree in Minnesota. If they're in a foul mood come '06 they're gonna want turnover. Pawlenty wants to be seen as David still battling the old hidebound Democrat establishment Goliath.
Ditto here. Considering the number of times I have seen the Dinasour Media misquote and mistrepresnt what was said to suit their own political agenda, I would not be surprised if this is a willful misquote. I bet this will turn out to be a case of the Reporter putting his/her own spin on a comment that is completely different.
Conservatives here are livid at Pawlenty. Just like the President he sold out on some issues to get along with the Liberal's. We all know it does not work. I for one want someone to run aginst him in the primaries. He himself split the party in Mn.
Is it Pawlenty or the GOP that's in trouble?
His first mistake was failing to cut the budget. His second was breaking his "no new taxes" pledge. Of course, none of it came as a surprise.

Speak for yourself. If we have a primary battle we guarantee a Hatch govenorship. I wan't happy about the tax issue, but I'm hardly livid at Pawlenty.
