OK. I see qualifications (finally...), so what is his position on the strict construction of the Constitution?
The President's poll numbers have consistantly been 90% of republicans for him and 80% or more of libs against him and an even divide of the swing voters. Since the Miers debaucle, his conservative numbers have slipped so his poll numbers dipped considerably. Now that he has come back to his base, despite what the Dems are selling, the President's numbers will go back up like a rocket.
Don't you want the best person nominated? Persoanlly, I don't care if he's an Atheist, as long as his ideology and credentials are sound.
Hopefully Scalia like and not just Scalia Lite.

Laura said she would like to see a woman on the court and that the opposition to Miers may have been sexist. Laura Bush is also not an elected official or a spokesperson for the GOP. GWB's views are the ones that count. The Dems would like you to believe that Conservatives are anti-women. Hillary will be playing the gender card in 2008.
Well let's see: Hannity, Ann Coulter, Rush, Savage, and Laura Ingraham all spoke very highly of Janice Rogers Brown. And Laura Bush dropped her gender stink bomb. And Team Bush allowed that stink bomb to linger. What member of the Bush team broke out the lysol? How much was dispensed?
They [Hannity, Ann Coulter, Rush, Savage, and Laura Ingraham] spoke highly of her because of qualifications and judicial philosophy. However, they were not pushing her as the leading candidate. Even if they were, they do not speak for rank and file conservatives. They speak for themselves.
Laura Bush is entitled to her opinion. Linger? Only in the minds of those who wish to make the views of the unelected and unaccountable First Lady a political issue. The best course is to ignore her remarks and move on.
But I'm supposed to not say anything about a man being chosen? Why not? I'm not saying he's a bad choice. I'm just pointing out that Bush may have factored this choice in. And I'm curious how firmly he will stand by his man when the left goes at him.
If you see the SCOTUS as a place for quotas and not judicial excellence, then gender, race, religion, ethnicity, etc., are relevant to your distorted world view and matter. I don't care who Bush nominates for judicial postitions as long as they are qualified and have an originalist judicial philosophy.
Sure people should feel good, but to get it right: feel good about THEIR accomplishment. This is our chance, as many are saying. They are saddled up and ready to fight. The question I have, is Bush ready to fight as well? I'm not so sure.
Bush not ready to fight for HIS nominee? Do you really believe he wants to see Alito go down in flames and start all over again? Of course he will fight, and this time he will have his posse with him. i.e., his conservative base.
Lots of urban poor who like the taste of federal money and a substantial population of French Canadians (insert French and/or Canadian joke here).
I really don't remember, but I can't imagine that he would dare vote against him.
Democrats in State or Federal level positions are rare as hen's teeth here in Florida, and we have him in out sights for election defeat.
Despite the MSM claims that he can't be beaten, he knows better.
Due to the excellent Catholic educations provided over the past 100 years by the Catholic church, there is a plethora of Catholic who have done well in medicine and law. Sadly this ended for the most part in the 60's

LOL. I know I am not the only one from whom NPR elicits that response. Sometimes, when driving in rush hour traffic, I would actually glance around at other drivers to see who else was pounding the dashboard :)
The great aspect of this nomination is that two of the most liberal Republicans in the Senate - Lincoln Chafee and Olympia Snowe are both up for re-election in 2006.
Let's hold their feet to the fire or make them suffer the consequences!

Well I was one of the people who was willing to be happy with Miers, but I have to say that Alito has much more solid credentials. The Dems had very little to say that was bad about Miers (especially compared to some of what I saw on this site!) but Alito will wave a red flag in front of them. Those who wanted a fight will have it--everyone will come out swinging! I think Alito can be confirmed even without the nuclear option because his paper qualifications are quite strong.
This proves the Bush Presidency is not weakened if he is willing to take on a fight like this. And he took back the news cycle so that no one is talking about the Libby indictment this morning.
I was kind of hoping for Janice Rogers Brown as the ultimate fight but I'm more than satisfied with Alito. He didn't get the nickname Scalito for nothing.
With Scalia/Thomas/Alito are a reliable bloc, and Roberts as Chief, things are looking good.
And as others have said, there is still the outside possibility of a third vacancy... it's only 2005.
Schmucky Schumer has said it's sad the president has chosen to divide the country with this nomination!
