Hastert Comments on the Online Freedom of Speech Act

House Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL) issued the following statement after House Democrats rejected H.R. 1606, the Online Freedom of Speech Act. The bill failed 225-182. Under the House suspension rules, it needed a two-thirds majority to pass.

“Today’s action marks a sad day for one of our nation’s most sacred rights: freedom of speech. The federal government seeks to control and regulate the Internet, but the last thing this Congress should be doing is trying to stifle public debate online. This bill would have kept the hands of the federal government off of Internet speech and protected the online debate that’s underway. Our world has evolved and grown more technologically savvy. Lawmakers need to adjust to these changes. Unfortunately, opponents of online speech have decided to punish our changing technological world. It’s especially unfortunate that Democratic Leader Pelosi voted no to free speech. This bill will come back under regular order, and I encourage all those who support free speech on the Internet to make their voices heard.”

Note: When Congress passed campaign finance reform in 2002, the legislation did not identify the Internet as a target of regulation. But recently a federal judge ruled that the FEC's previous broad exemption of the Internet was impermissible, absent clear direction from Congress. HR 1606 would exclude blogs and other types of communications over the Internet from regulation by the FEC.

I just picked this up from Speaker Hastert's Journal (His Blog) I cant find it on his press page all though this reads like a release. No surprise Pelosi voted 'no'. I am just glad that Speaker Hastert is actually so behind this legislation.

"Yeah, that will teach them nasty right wingers at Free Republic! Glad someone is FINALLY getting them"

They are fully aware that the Fascists rules imposed by their "heros" are ONLY applied to their enemies never to the "true believers"

The speaker is an idiot.

His congress passed the vague anti-free speech CFR law that led to this mess.

Congress shall make no law... abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press...

It would be easy to ask, what part of "Congress hall make no law..." do members of congress and President Bush not understand?

The fact is, they do understand what it means and chose to disregard its meaning and disregard their oaths to uphold the constitution by passing McCain-Feingold CFR. Their intent was to violate the constitution and their oaths to uphold it.

They got away with those crimes -- sort of -- now they want to commit others in similar fashion.

At last Hastert speaks out on the issue. He should have rounded up the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy beforehand to let us know he needed more votes.

Congressional districts with Congress-critters voting for Fascism and against this bill should be cut out of the federal budget as soon as possible.

"I thought the Democrats believed in free speech?"

They're in favor of their speech, not yours, not mine.

They're thugs.

"I thought the Democrats believed in free speech?"

The Rats "believe" that they have exclusive rights to political power and they are justified in, and entitled to, perform any act of deception, coercion, corruption or abrogation of individual rights to achieve or maintain their political power.

My son gave me a computer for Christmas in 2004.I'm still not very good on it,but I have gained a lot of knowledge
on political, veterans, health issues and just about any other subject I would be interested in.My country has changed so much since I was a kid. While listening to politicians and their feeble excuses for really never getting anything done.I've come to understand that most politicians don't want us to have such information at our
fingertips.I think if most Americans knew what was really going on in our government, there would be another revolution. It is so corrupt as to be beyond belief. Our
country has been under attack for a long time.People want to do their own thing with little concern with what is or isn't right. No morals. The news media uses their 1st amend-
ment rights to attack the American government at every turn. They don't really care that they make us look like a bunch of un-united idiots to the rest of the world.I will
always believe that was what the Vietnam war was really all about. To tear apart this country.I guess this could go on forever, but, I think I've made my point.(or at least stated my opinion!)A lot of people don't like us having access to such readily available information. It's a lot easier to B.S. the public when they're in the dark.I know all you military guy's from the old days remember classes on communists doctrine.
Look to the left and you'll see a lot in common with those classes.Look to Ted Kennedy,Nancy Pelose,Charles Schumer,
Howard Dean or about anyone on the left.Don't look at what
they say look at what they do,and then tell me these people are for America.
