WAL-MART BANS CHRISTMAS: BOYCOTT LAUNCHED
Catholic League ^ | 9 November 2005 | William Donohue

WAL-MART BANS CHRISTMAS:

BOYCOTT LAUNCHED

A woman who recently complained to Wal-Mart that the store was replacing “Merry Christmas” with “Happy Holidays” received an e-mail response from Customer Service. It appears below in its exact form:

“Walmart is a world wide organization and must remain conscious of this. The majority of the world still has different practices other than ‘christmas’ which is an ancient tradition that has its roots in Siberian shamanism. The colors associated with ‘christmas’ red and white are actually a representation of of the aminita mascera mushroom. Santa is also borrowed from the Caucuses, mistletoe from the Celts, yule log from the Goths, the time from the Visigoth and the tree from the worship of Baal. It is a wide wide world.”

To which Catholic League president Bill Donohue says: “This statement was signed by someone called Kirby. When I read it, I thought he might be drunk. But I was wrong. We sent Kirby’s response to Wal-Mart’s headquarters only to find that Dan Fogleman, Senior Manager, Public Relations, agrees. After acknowledging that he read Kirby’s response, Fogleman said, in part, the following”:

“As a retailer, we recognize some of our customers may be shopping for Chanukah or Kwanza gifts during this time of year and we certainly want these customers in our stores and to feel welcome, just as we do those buying for Christmas. As an employer, we recognize the significance of the Christmas holiday among our family of associates…and close our stores in observance, the only day during the year that we are closed.”

Bill Donohue says: “It’s nice to know that Wal-Mart is closed on a federal holiday. Now here is why I am asking the leaders of 126 religious organizations that span seven religious communities to boycott Wal-Mart. Go to its website and search for Hanukkah and up come 200 items. Click on Kwanzaa and up come 77. Click on Christmas, and here’s what you get: ‘We’ve brought you to our ‘Holiday’ page based on your search.’ In other words, Wal-Mart is practicing discrimination.”

Because they are not big enough to warrant their own special category.. The Holiday season is so huge, they have an entire category of their own.. from a marketing and web standpoint, it is efficient, easy to develop, easy to use in promotions (such as what you see on their front page that takes you to the 'Holiday' section, and easy for the customers to locate what they are looking for.

The statement was false, I pointed that out.

Not in your comment #53 you didn't...I ALSO prize accuracy.

I'd hate to pick on Walmart, but I must admit, I am troubled by this and hope that their discrimination against Christmas ceases immediately.

Look, Walmart is a BUSINESS... and I'm just as happy with them NOT wishing me "Merry Christmas" or "Happy Hannakah" or whatever. It's insincere. They are there to take my $$ and make a profit, not to spread good cheer and brotherly love and peace on earth.. and I'm happy to give them my $$ if the price is right. And I'LL say Merry Christmas. Somehow, a big, impersonal corporation trying to inject a Christian or otherwise religious message into their marketing is gross.

It may come from the Catholic League, but it really looks like they've been had. The original e-mail from 'Kirby' was apparently sent to the CL by an unnamed recipient, and there is no confirmation anywhere that it actually came from Walmart. The Walmart guy "acknowledged that he read the letter from Kirby," but that's a far cry from acknowledging that Walmart sent it. The only statement that is actually from Walmart is the quote from Fogleman, and even that is an extract which really isn't inflammatory...

LOL. When I managed a Radio Shack company store in the early '80s we didn't work Thanksgiving or Christmas either, it's not a new thing.

Of course, I worked open to close EVERY day from Black Friday through Christmas Eve. Sundays included.

"A Christmas tree is an evolution from Baal worship"

That comes from Jeremiah 10:3-4

Didn't Walmart stop selling guns too, or something like that??
They did quit carrying handguns. You can still order them, they just don't have them "under glass" in the store.

Who cares?

This may peeve some people, but Christmas isn't even about Christians. Where in the Bible does it mention this holiday or Santa Claus? We don't even know exactly when Jesus was born. All it is is a pagan holiday with a Christian slant.

If you want to follow Scripture, celebrate Hanukkah.

Anyway, pick fights that really matter to God.

>>>They reap the profits from the season they should not insult us with the generic "Happy Holidays".>>>

If you get 'offended' by that, then you are the one with the problem.

Email sent as feedback on their site:

I read that you are no longer acknowledging Christmas to your many Christian customers. As I did a search for Christmas and up pops "Holiday". Yet I do a search on Kwaanza or Hanukkah and both those remain as is and are not replaced with "Holiday". This will come back to bite you in the shorts Walmart. Sad to say you've offended this Christian. I've always advocated for Walmart in the past. I will think twice now before doing that or shopping there. I celebrate Christmas, not holiday. Thanks for your time. xxx

Too bad you and I are already married, to other people. A woman who buys her husband is definately a keeper.

They are not excluding Christmas. They are INCLUDING other religions which is perfectly valid and reasonable.

This seems to be the case in the three local WalMart stores we shop in too.
Since they are a general retailer, I've got no problem with that either.
If you want a "Just Christian" store, the go to your local Christian Bookstore - which is where I go when I want decidedly Christian stuff.

I agree, I think that an email to Wal-Mart is far more effective a way to let the know how I feel about Christmas being "re-labelled". I simply told them I appreciate how much they support the troops, and I want to shop for "Christmas" items there...

Not overreacting, but I did the research, and yes, if you put in "Christmas" it tells you that you really wanted "Holiday" instead. Rather disconcerting...
