Rep. John P. Murtha, D-Pa. Murtha and (who else) Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., are leading efforts to ban "abusive treatment" of foreign prisoners.

Rep. Silvestre Reyes (D-Tx), Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-CA) (L), and Rep. Alcee Hastings (D-FL) press conference today called by House Select Intelligence Committee Democrats.

From L-R are: Rep. John Tierney (D-MA), Eshoo and Rep. Jane Harman (D-CA). (Harman is my congress-critter. Pretends to be a moderate. Barf.)

For a dumb dem - not a bad record. Why did he go and do this? For Oil?

Perhaps the Dems thought that by putting an ex-military man up, they would gain some traction. They thought the same thing with John Kerry's candidacy. Murtha's ex-Marine status gives him a 'shield' when the Repubs start attacking his position. The Dems will scream "...he's a former Marine, how dare you criticize him."

By the way, is anyone monitoring the comments on DU?

Asked this earlier but no answer.. Has anything like this happened before while the President was out of the country?

Prolly not, But, this a call the bluff moment when the R's seems to have grown a spine. I cannot wait to see how it plays out.

It's like a British Parliament vote of confidence in the Prime Minister, isn't it?

More Murtha dirt from RollCall -

REPUBLICANS FIGHTING BACK, CON'T
Roll Call [sub. required]:

Republican lawmakers say that ties between Rep. John Murtha (D-Pa.) and his brother's lobbying firm, KSA Consulting, may warrant investigation by the House ethics committee...

According to a June 13 article in The Los Angeles Times, the fiscal 2005 defense appropriations bill included more than $20 million in funding for at least 10 companies for whom KSA lobbied. Carmen Scialabba, a longtime Murtha aide, works at KSA as well.

KSA directly lobbied Murtha's office on behalf of seven companies, and a Murtha aide told a defense contractor that it should retain KSA to represent it, according to the LA Times.

In early 2004, Murtha reportedly leaned on U.S. Navy officials to sign a contract to transfer the Hunters Point Shipyard to the city of San Francisco, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. A company called Lennar Inc. had right to the land, and Laurence Pelosi, nephew to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), was an executive with the firm at that time.

Murtha also inserted earmarks in defense bills that steered millions of dollars in federal research funds toward companies owned by children of fellow Pennsylvania Rep. Paul Kanjorski (D). ..

Victory isn't a strategy? Perhaps if your Goal is asthe Dems, to lose the war, it's an unpalatable strategy but strategy nevertheless it is.

Are Dems trying to redefine another word?

The GOP should have Senator Robert Dole front and center countering Murtha's rhetoric.

He's the perfect antidote.

Everytime a liberal opens his mouth, another insurgent kills an American soldier; another suicide bomber straps on a belt and blows up 50 people. The only thing that will halt the spread of terrorism is an America and a world united against it. If Americans are not intelligent enough to see through the crocodile tears, demagoguery, and dementia of retrogressive liberal Democrats, this country is doomed.

"Why did he go and do this?"

He puts his finger into the wind to find out which direction it is blowing. He better hope the polls are right.

Can't believe it but I have to leave for any appointment. Could someone ping (or post to me) when the vote is final? I'm going to try to log in periodically. Thanks!

Hello,

Victory is not a strategy? He actually said that? What is victory then? Something that the Dems hate when it applies to the the US, I would imagine. I have reached the point of no return in dealing with anyone that has a "D" next to their name, including many family members. The Thanksgiving table talk is going to be interesting to say the least.

Glad to be here, MOgirl
