All your friends would kick in pocket change and cruise around in your sweet fire engine red Pinto all weekend.

Gas has been under $2 a gallon for regular for some time now here in Hampton Roads. If people continue to consolidate trips and go gentle on the gas pedal the price will continue to fall.

The other thing I use to enjoy that they don't have today is the small rubber tube that would make a ding dong noise when you ran over it to alert the attendant that there was a customer out front. Wow...yeah.... I remember those....
You did that? You were a bad kid huh? :)

Let's hope so. It will give the economy a boost around the holidays.

but do you remember .32 a gallon?
When I started driving, gas ran about $.25 a gallon for Sunoco Custom Blend 260 (?). I was making $.75 and hour.

Actually, most of Canada would qualify as "God's country" from an aesthetic standpoint. National Geographic published a book around 10-15 years ago called "Driving the Trans-Canada Highway" or something like that. If you ever have the time, I'd highly recommend a trip from coast to coast in Canada. Canada has very few limited-access highways outside the cities, so it's sort of like driving across the United States on one of those old Federal highways (US-30, US-66, etc.).
The main route of the Trans-Canada takes you through most of the country's major cities (Toronto and Edmonton are the two major exceptions), with lots of beautiful country in between.
Heck, even the cities up there are very nice. For all of its problems with a dysfunctional government, Canada's capital city of Ottawa is one of the most beautiful cities in all of North America.

Ice skating on the Rideau Canal in Ottawa is one of the unique experiences in North America, too.

I'm too political. Every Canadian I've met from Ottawa is an idiot. So I will avoid it. But I also won't spend a dime in San Francisco. I hate that place.
But I would like to do a trans Canada trip someday. Thanks for the pics.

Be sure to freep-mail me before you go!
I'll make sure you find all the out-of-the-way places along the route that make it a great trip. And make sure you fuel up in Sault Ste. Marie, since the ride along the north shore of Lake Superior from "the Soo" to Thunder Bay is 450 miles and will take about 9 hours -- and gas stations along the route are few and far between!

Maybe it will even go "down" to pre-Katrina levels.
I hope America's memory isn't so short that it can consider $2-a-gallon gas a good deal.

Friday night and my friends and I had gone out for some bowling and pool. We ran out of gas on the way home and pushed the car into a gas station, one that stayed open 24/7.
We had 17 cents among us and the gas was 29.9. 16 cents in the tank and a squirt in the carborator! We made it to Smitty's house where we borrowed gas from his Dad's pickup, (the old fashioned way with a rubber tube!)

visiting in the midwest...$1.81 in central Ohio

My theory--gas prices and the trauma of those hurricanes are behind Bush's recent low numbers. We'll see if it bears out now that prices are sinking.

"sweet fire engine red Pinto all weekend."
A 1972 Pinto would get 30mpg.At .25 a gallon you could drive forever on $2.00.
